  1. I have myself a 10mth old patterdale dog pup and would like some recommendations on some books for a beginner to keep myself right with him or would be interested if any members have some terrier books for sale. Thanks Nicola
  2. Errrr can't see how anyone with health tested labs and spaniels with generations of good breeding behind them could ever be threatened by someone breeding a pack of mongrels...... Good luck with them, but I just hope folks see them for what they are as they are false advertised at the moment, you have already admitted you have no idea what they would be like as workers..... Nic
  3. I can highly recommend Barlow I have a son of his and he's a cracking wee dog with the emphasis on wee as he's a proper sized cocker with a nice strong dog head and thick chest but is tiny in size big in heart Simons website : http://www.hawcroftgundogs.co.uk/ Nic
  4. new breed, specifically bred for 20 years , what a load of twaddle !! puppyfarmed mongrels and I hope folks see them for what they are and don't waste their money on them !! Nic
  5. you're welcome, where about are you based and perhaps I and others can suggest a few starting points on dogs to look for ? Nic
  6. Trick would be to use something that you have seen working/trialling yourself and liked the look of, also we sometimes think there aren't any but find what the weaker points are with your bitch and then pick a sire that has strong points in those areas and try and compliment each other, or find a sire that you have seen the offspring of work or trial. Nic
  7. Some fair and wise advice given so far especially from Withellmoor. I would tend to go for a spaniel (cocker or springer) for a first dog if rough shooting is the order of the day, labs just can't flush game as well as spaniels, but as Kev has said you will be spending the next 10 years or so with this dog so you have to go with a dog that you personally like the look and sound of, maybe spent an hour or two with a pro dog trainer, get a demo of the breed types and what jobs they do and are expected to carry out, this would be money very well spent and give you a first hand insight int
  8. lol Kev sad thing is thats more common than not ! Smarty - Regards the comments of 6 weeks old it is the lottery, you could pick the smallest pup and it turns into the biggest adult, I personally am not so hung up on size but like my male dogs to look like dogs and my bitches to look like bitches, I like a big strong dog, not a wirey whippety type, Nic
  9. None of the names mentioned scream out to me small spaniels, not wanting to open a big can of worms here but papers sometimes mean very little there are many cockers out there registered as cockers with ftch parents when there is springer in their lineage and vice versa with the springers, it's a lottery sometimes but it happens and it pays to know the people you deal with when buying a spaniel. Do you know anything else about the dams lines ? I find it a bit weird the breeder had papers but didn't pass them on ? Nic
  10. think it might be samsalin dog rescue ? they are mentioned on here :- http://www.waynnsongundogs.co.uk/our_dogs/...ingers_sdr.html Nic
  11. Damn can't remember the name, did he not also help run the dog creche at the cla.....the name MIGHT come to me...must be an age thing Nic
  12. Good luck with the dogs Gary, I admit I have probably been unlucky with mine, but had been told afterwards they can sometimes be vocal, a local keeper has 6 or 7 vizslas and they are the same, howl in the truck inbetween drives when he goes picking up, and thats the ONLY thing thats put me off otherwise I have found her quite easy to train, she has a lovely soft mouth and marks quite well, maybe I could get her voicebox mended Best of luck with the dogs you have they look cracking, Nic
  13. out of those mentioned so far I would go for the cocker, I have a vizsla and have it as a pot licker ! bought as a deer dog she's too vocal, when left alone in the landie she howsl the place down, that then has continued when travelling in the back of the navara even if other dogs are there or not, if I take her out picking up she has to be with me the whole day if left she howsl, I am not saying thats the case with them all just my personal experience and it has put me off ever having another one. As for the cockers, I have 3 at the moment and they are cracking wee dogs, very fun Nic
  14. Fingers crossed for neaps Ali as she's a cracking bitch Nicola
  15. Nice looking pup, where did she come from ? Nicola
  16. Out of those mentioned if the 15 wk old pups in w yorkshire are who I think they are they would be the best put on this thread so far, I am going to keep my opinion on the others mentioned to myself but would highly recommend the yorkshire pups Nicola
  17. I use my springers as my peg dogs , they are a bit more alert and keen than the labs, but there's something pride inspiting watching them sat there steady to all going on about them Nicola
  18. some excellent sound advice from ess
  19. ditto everything drummuir has said. your stud dog needs to be hip scoredand eye tested. youd have to be crazy to breed without a good hip score/eye test. Do you really Farlap? Out of curiosity would you hip score a 3 yr old Lab which has worked say 2 times or three times week ?Personally I think its a bit late to hip score but eye test yes.. As my vet says if a dog has good hips it will have good hips for life, and the same score roughly at 3 years as it would have had at 12mths, ie they stay sound. I personally if looking to mate a lab bitch would not use a dog unless it had
  20. Nice looking dog and good luck with the advert, has Jake been hip scored and eye tested ? these are the minimum requirements expected by most bitch owners when looking for a stud dog, then there are dna tests such as optigen and cnm too. Some more for you to think about. Nicola
  21. Thank you !! I guess just the con rod thing we have to watch for Nic
  22. Yeah watched it and it's a real worry !! have a 2003 D22 model with 82k on the clock and this thing does offroad and motorway cruising... Nicola
  23. I would like to echo my support, understand totally where you are coming from have moderated and run my fair share of forums and it is never easy, good luck Nicola
  24. The hard reality of it is why would someone use your dog rather than any ftw's or ftch's in the area ? what sets him apart from other stud dogs on offer ? Most other non-trialled dogs at stud are used as people watch them daily or weekly working their socks off at a shoot and are good honest workers, so they know what they are going to get pup wise. Nicola
