  1. When we were kids we had rabbiting dogs the likes of which you dont see much of nowadays they didnt need fell or moorland to catch but would work the bramble and gorse round the pits as well as any terrier they were all whippet collie xs if you got one that had thrown to the whippet you were quids in and it was nothing to come home with a dozen with the right dog. There was a few that were breeding a regular type back then hard as nag nails but sadly they are no more and i cant remember the last time i saw a gang of kids out for bunnys times change and so do the juks im afraid. I would have
  2. Simoman im with you on the bananas mate they cook nice in the ashes of a camp fire too maple syrup and squirty cream for me. And for the main course steak or mackrel.
  3. You need a hell of a lot of bunnys in an area to do a hundred on the lamp ive known it be done but only when blocking game holes on moorsides ive hit sixtys more than a few times but these were also on gameholed walls with the holes left open but the numbers soon decrease as you hit an area what starts at sixty is in three good nights forty then so on if theres dogs out there like the minshaw strain and doxhopes dererhound strains was back then they want to be worshipped like gods the rabbits are there in numbers in many places but its rare to see hauls like them today.
  4. Them deerhound blooded dogs can windscent a herd from a good quater of a mile or even more away
  5. Its to be expected for the dog to be gone a while in forestry and either stay with the kill after the course or be hunting a drag but an hours a fair long time . Its the only trouble when your dogs off in the woods sometimes they come back without a mark on em not even a bit of hair and theyve had one over and if they dont back track you will be leaving dead deer all over the place as its not easy to backtrack the course yourself and its suprising how they blend in when down. As frank says looks like hes in the making teach him to go back for dropped dummys with the command go back when yo
  6. A perfect age youve got him at chester good luck with him lad.
  7. Cracking looking dog not unlike the old Taffy that hancock had. I heard hes using track dogs nowadays and some of the sizes of pups ive seen about have been well big and strong too heavy for rabbits by far thers a pup on our village at the moment makes my 26 inch dog look like a whippet god knows how big that is 30/31inch at least
  8. I see your quite sure then Frank Im affraid i want both in one dog do you know where i can get one please. Its some dog that can do 6 from 6 in winter with fair law more than a couple of times in its lifetime. Whereas a good dog needs a lot of easy bunnys to do the ton and the stamina to do it more than a couple of times a week. Now the rabbit dog might not catch hares but the hare dog will have little trouble with bunnys so for me anyroad it would be the coursing dog.
  9. Greenfinch http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/...finch/index.asp Not the best greeny ive heard as i think misses the end note off. Dunnock http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/...nnock/index.asp Slow the last few notes of the dunnock down and they often just make that sound as opposed to the full song.
  10. Sounds like the dogs doing his job just relax and enjoy the spectacle of him hunting and catching give him loads of praise every time he retrieves his catch to you. Dispatching will come easy for you to do with practice all you need to do is get the dog out. You can get involved controlling him as you round the field corner and sending him on to hunt or just encourage him at something youve seen and he hasnt he will soon learn to trust your judgement as much as his own. As for a slip lead if you really need one a length of nylon band or bailer or even your lead just threaded under the co
  11. They certainly do its all over the trent and all the waterways round here looks pretty but good for nothing other than looking at.
  12. Top pics Pup looks right well Skycat and this weather they love the water take mine most mornings as the rivers only accross the road but hes nesh and will only stay in the river if its hot if not a couple of retrieves and he knobs off with the stick so its time up. Are you gonna try and teach the sparra to dive as she is looking underwater already seen a dog taught once a mongrel that was used for fetching golfballs out the water he could stay down a good threequaters of a minote totally submerged.
  13. Stick with him nelly they get better as they age
  14. Our local council went mad about ten years ago and planted thousands of hazels around all the industrial parks before that there wasnt that many now theres stacks good eating. Weathers perfect for berries and nuts but the farmers are moaning about their crops with good reason. As regards the local country harvest its been a cracking start to the year blackberrys will be like little apples and the local orchards and plum trees are laden but the cherries soon went with the rain.
  15. Your mates spot on about nose with deerhounds there good at wind scenting i like a bit of genuine deerhound in the mix for that reason.

  20. Hiya Shaheen The pic in your avatar is well impressive plenty of sport where you are by the looks of it.
  21. Seen it a few times in lurchers and other breeds once theres no threat the dog dont want to know its worse still if your dogs intent on retrieving to hand. Just get it to drop it and finish it yourself. I know you have to do your job but i never run foxs nowadays better to wire and shoot them jmo.
