  1. Sorry I don't quite get you? Plenty of dogs catch fallow on the run in the open mate. And yes I agree with you that taking big deer requires level of skill from a dog, but I think it also does take bottle, to hit into something much bigger than you and ruck with it once its down. I would argue that fora lot of dogs, a fox is a lot easier to do, but that also just about mindset. Edited to add big bucks a different animal to the rest of the fallow population.
  2. It’s also a bit like most other quarry, and dogs and indeed people ......lots are average, some are shit and some are good.
  3. A fast anything will make a slow anything look slow. But you get some very good roe bucks. Mind you I might just be watching slow dogs ?
  4. I’d say it’s some and some. Pre ban, seen dogs straight like deer, take them out of the seat, and yards from cover etc. Also seen dogs made to look silly by pretty much every type of deer, and a good strong fallow or roe buck out in the open and motoring isn’t slow, and a good size fallow when running flat out (especially with any gradient) is a rough thing to stop dead in the open. Takes the right dog.
  5. I’ve still never seen a good one. Sure they are out there, they seem to be ok in nz and Oz, at least the xs anyway.
  6. Without wanting to sound argumentative ......I remember that thread where Dan said his dogs got left for dead by the deer local to him. But I don’t think that means all deer all over the states are uncatchable to running dogs. People have bred dogs that will catch muntjac, roe, cwd, fallow, sika, red deer and boar in the uk, have taken sambar, barsinga, pigs and red kangaroos in oz, wolfs, jackals, hares and god knows what else everywhere else. And you’re telling me no one has a dog fast enough to catch fallow, sika and various other species of deer the similar size and spe
  7. Yer that wasn’t the issue at hand, Folk were questioning the ability of dogs to run them, saying different deer etc. There are deffo folk killing deer with running dogs in the good old usa
  8. Sadly we have a fair bit of the former problem!
  9. Can’t think why you couldn’t kill deer in the states with running dogs. They have fallow and sika like we do, and white tails and mules aren’t that much bigger than fallow in general.
  10. Most deer caught in woods are unlucky. They either get pushed into the dog by another dog, break too late and get pulled over in a few yards as they break from cover or happen to run across a track or ride at the wrong moment, or just run into something. Only a few are coursed flat out through the woods and pulled over as would be in an open field.
  11. Why do you want a pure out of interest ?
  12. I have been surprised how fast she is to be honest mate. She is very sharp as well, spots anything that moves in the woods. I don’t think it bodes well for her future though alas.
  13. Just got a poultice on his foot mate. Cut his foot and not sure if there’s something stuck in there. The ground here is hard on a dog. First slip lamping the other night. But at least he caught it so he had a 100% success rate for the night ?
  14. The bar has been set high for Big Gus aka Gary when it’s his turn.
  15. A heeler x whippet or grey would be interesting ......
  16. That’s smart. Also in this seasons must have colour scheme ?
  17. Very very true. Also makes me laugh that we’ve lived very similar lives and met on THL when we both retired from the madness..... and look where we are now ? As someone once said the quality of a mans life can be measured by the quality of his friendships.
  18. They tend to have volunteer mounted sections, and when needed horses and riders come down to other areas. But main head quarters abs stables of mounted unit is in Milton Keynes
  19. The mounted police are based in Milton Keynes. Fact for you
  20. Don’t worry it’s been said before mate, I have been very lucky. One day I might write a book, but perhaps better being released after I’m dead ?
  21. That’s the niece to my old white bull x bitch. Been on here a few times as a pup I think. Saluki thing is going really well now, but on three legs at the moment. This is his first season and he has done most things I would expect of him when he’s fully mature, so excited for next season.
  22. To a point. She is very cunning, but also just goes through things if they are in her way. So she works quarry well and runs clever but no self preservation.
  23. I wrote a massive reply to you shaaaark and then it deleted itself ? it was my life story so maybe better it did get deleted ? The sort version is I have been very lucky. Up till 2009 I dedicated my life to adventure, travel and pushing the limits. And since then I’ve dedicated it to farming and hunting with dogs.
