My wife doesn't really care for dogs or hunting but excepts in good heart it as something I do . Last new years day the mother in law had arranged for the family to go for a meal . I got up and said to the missus I was just going to let the dog to clear himself out . She says " don't be long mums booked a table " yer yer I says and of i go. The dog has a shite puts his nose to the ground and goes over to the dead rabbit earth that we walk past every day. I'm not worried because it's dead and hasn't even got a rabbit in it . He disappears down and starts to bay. A long story short i missed the

@ Fredthefrog. Of the three dogs I lost one was three year old and had to pts . The other two were gifted to me they were half brother sister. And both never made it in the job . But the man that bred them has the brother and he's grafting. Not all pups in a litter turn out to be workers and the man that bred them was happy that they got the chance to be tried at what they were bred for. Theres no shame in having a pup that doesn't work! There's not many that have litters that can garrantee they'll all turn out to be workers!!

Well the young first season bitch that I had decided there and then that the job wasn't for her . She was given plenty of time and never worked again . Now wether that's my fault for letting her enter at 15 months old I don't know but for me she had failed!
-
@ alli. It's a sickener for sure when someone betrays your trust. I suppose for some men a terrier is only a failure when their baron and can't be used to knock out puppies!
-
@ alli. You can bet your bottom dollar he's dropping you name as well when selling the pups ! It's all a learning curve mate .
-
@ long dogs exactly what a friend said to me. I suppose it's what you tolerate in your yard, in my mind I had given her plenty of chances to prove herself. But another man might of put her away until next season. So to go back to my original question what do you consider a first season failure and what mistakes would you tolerate and put down to inexperience ?
-
No opinions on what a first season failure is lads? Ok I'll start then I had a bitch at about 15 months old and she was showing all the signs of wanting to start work. Now I know where there's a nice earth for puppy to start and build confidence . One holer rabbity spot literally two feet down . She flys in makes contact and comes out as fast as she went in! After that she was given time and tried again but she wouldn't go to ground again. Now for me that's a failure!

@ johnrussell84 I was talking about losing three dogs last season ! " past tense" . Not this coming season.
-
Last season I had a bit of bad luck and I went from having three dogs to zero before the season had even finished. This leaves me with two first season dogs for this year. I know there's a lot of lads that have got a lot of high hopes" as we all have "for their first season dogs. Now if these two fail that's five dogs in two seasons that I'll have gone through! This got me thinking what do you class as failing in a first season dog? Do you tolerate certain things and put them down to inexperience ?
-
Lads has it always been this way with BN being in it for the money, or was it different years ago? If he's always been a peddlar how ever did his name get so big?
-
Might not be about easy money for him now. He might have bigger and better challenges to face.

I've know of a lot of terrier men that have used certain dogs of a certain line to go over there bitches , even though the dogs have had maybe only a few good seasons at most under their belt. Just because the dog has a lot of good breeding all the way through their line. I'm not saying it's wrong or right! But a lot of men will say only use a dog that's been dug too for a lot of seasons, but then to go and use a dog that's of a certain line! Jmho

Assuming their all in good health . I like a bold and confident pup.

Jaysus Peakoil I got asked if I was on drugs for suggesting it might be a pet dog. Let alone a chupacabre lol
-
Well there you go it can happen or should I say it has happened before . A pet dog couldve done it. I suppose it's hard for some people to see the bigger picture when they've got such a small screen! Lol
-
@ alimac no drugs just a heavy drinking session lol
-
If it was a fox then I would have a look about to see if there's any pugged up. That's a lot of chicken for a fox to carry all at once. Maybe it couldve been a pet dog that's killed them and the owner has tried to take the evidence . Just a thought!

The thing about being a " name" in the terrier world is it's something that's given to them by other lads! I doubt it's something that they started out with the intentions of doing. They only get the reputation they have because they have the knack of producing consistent workers more often than not. I've only met two " names" in the terrier job and Im sure theyre both clever enough to admit that they're not names in the job . As they both realise it's a poisoned chalice! But what's happened is they're both names now like it or not. The couple of times I've seen them out and about you can't

A mate of mine has a jrt x cocker and it's really good at bushing and rating. It's Defo not an earth dog but he's not bothered he's happy with her.

I know someone with locked in syndrome , and it's a terrible thing to see someone you know have to go through it. It must be hell not being able to do nothing accept blink. If it was an animal you wouldn't let it suffer and have it put to sleep Shame he has to suffer for the remainder of his life!!
