That’s exactly where you need a dog that quarters the ground and finds its own quarry.

The heather was knee deep in places, and sometimes covered in a layer of frost or thin ice.

Other places were scree and rocks;

Hard work for man and dog.

Get them on the short grass and you could get a few decent spins . But in general they're easy . Seen quite a few coursing dogs come up back in day and struggle badly.  Couldn't adapt to the heather and haggs . Glad they're protected now . Keepers wipe them out in thousands

We were there for four days. We did ferreting and lamping rabbits lower down and went up the mountains daytime for the hares, probably 2 or 3 hours each time, I didn’t keep a check on the time. It got down to below -10 degrees at times .

Its right what Drover says about the heather; there was a whippet with us that was great on the rabbits, but it’s legs got cut to bits first time on the frozen heather on the hares further up the mountains.

Most lurcher lads from Wales,don't hunt the hills mate,for the simple reason they are barren....they will be travelling down the M4 corridor towards Oxford/London way,Forest of Dean ,Gloucester/Midlands to put stuff Infront of the dogs.. everything local gets hammered to f**k mate.... someone sees a rabbit and there's 30 lads with runners and bushers out after it lol...

If digging is your game,then you don't have to leave your village or Wales tbh....harder work to stay under the radar,that's why lots of lads take it up for 5 minutes..then just stick with the runners..Easier when it comes on top they just leave their dogs and run

Best one I ran was on Phil's I saw one run up on the moor n then out of sight so slipt Mia anyway, she then ran up up jump the fence ran up the moor n out of sight n were thinking she'd just come back when next thing it came back down the moor through the fence with Mia not far behind n it went into a sheep field were they'd ate it right down to the nub n it gave her a right good spin on there before she got him so from the start to the finish it was a memorable run that I should've took it to the taxidermist aswell..

I wish I had more pics from the pre-digital days .

I remember LDR taking a load of pics with a film camera of a night we had on deer and fox, I said no chemist would develop them, but he knew a chemist that would.

If you tried that these days, you’d be getting an early morning knock from the police ! LOL !
