tatsblisters 10,812
I agree in part with fireman tbh like has been said muntjac are tough little buggers and their can be a mile of difference between the bucks and does when a dog stops them. Remember a good buck a decent lurcher bitch I had bred out of my f1x saluki greyhound to mainly lamping lurchers i had in the past that were a mix of beddlington greyhound collie running past me and as she grabbed it's arse end it whipped round trying to gore her fortunately she whipped it over and got a throat hold on it and I was quik enough to dispatch it and hid it in some game crop to carry on as this spot in St Albans was literally crawling with them unfortunately it came on top with keeper's shortly after she took this munty and the police were waiting at the motor. 1 Quote Link to post

The part i agreed mate rightly or wrongly was the type of dog that suited him and like I said if I was to get a lurcher for small deer I would look no further than a strong coursing bred type. 1 Quote Link to post

Luckee legs 523
Pet subject of mine, as in my experience Muntjacs are a huge pain in the arse distracting dogs from rabbiting Hard to find a dog that isn't keen on them and they will run even from impenetrable cover when they sense a dog is very close. Dogs lose them in dense cover for sure, but any keen dog will put them up initially and given muntjacs seem to like to be close to manmade environments I end up keeping my dogs on leash more than Id like. A decent dog quickly closes on a muntjac, there's a lot of noise and it's not a risk I will take. Completely different to Roe which will embarrass a lot of dogs in the daytime, muntjacs will turn and face dogs and cause serious injury. I learnt my lessons as a teenager, losing a dog on muntjac in the early 1980s and have seen two other lurchers with nasty injuries. IMO To avoid injury to the lurcher the most important characteristics needed for muntjac are: the dog is smart with an Ali shuffle in its repertoire to keep out of trouble and owner is a decent runner 5 Quote Link to post
