I get huge bags of soil conditioner from my local council depot. It’s garden and parks waste that is heated to a high degree and is completely sterile. It has no nutritional value, but when added to raised beds, it make the soil more friable and promotes vigorous root growth . I love this site ! Where else could you start talking about Londonon coursing and end up talking about friable loam ? LOL ! Cheers. 2 Quote Link to post

Since getting into allotments and growing I’ve found soil isn’t just soil , Ph value, acidic, alkaline, limey , sandy , clay, and every vegetable needs a different type ! All this sort of talk reminds me of when I was in school, and I took 'rural science' as a subject, not 'gardening'. Mr Hickman was our teacher, drummed into us the importance of a good, friable loam, especially for beets and tubers!! 1 Quote Link to post
