Almost too pretty to shoot

Recommended Posts

Was doing some experimenting last night with powder coating some new bullets. Mixed some jet black with my Carolina Blue and came out with this Beautiful color scheme 🤩 one of the bench rest guys I chat with is calling them Robin eggs 🤣 tried the air fryer mode in my toaster oven and a lighter coating and seems like I'm finally getting that nice spray on looking finis 😎 now just gotta load these up and see how well they shoot

Over engineering just because you can ..love it!...my first thought was Viagra though 😆

I must admit that was the first thing that crossed my mind, A few years ago a mate brought a safe round that belonged to his dad after he had passed away, when i opened it, it was full of them, apparently he subsidised his pension by selling them in the local pubs Lol

No quite actually, this is arguably a much easier process th n traditional, at least for what I want these to be able to do

Alrighty then , so basically when it comes to shooting actual cast lead projectiles they need to be lubed and or protected in some way from contact with the bore of the firearm. If not done you'll end with lead building up in the lands and groves and it's a pain to get out affects accuracy and can be dangerous due to pressure problems. Most traditional guys use lube that presses into the groves of the bullet , and that can be made of all sorts of stuff for a wide range of uses and velocity . And it can be applied in a host of was from used special presses that both size the bullet to the wanted diameter and apply the lube, to pan lubing where bullets are stood up in a pan and melted lubed is poured in and allowed to sweep into and harden in the lube groves of the bullets which are then cut out and sized. Aslo have tumble lubing whish is just swirling bullets in a sludge type lube and it's just coats then.

There are some examples of lube sized bullets the blue being lube that's been pressed into the lube groves . Along with a copper gas check which protects the base of the bullet from the hot gases at higher pressures . Which could melt or cut the base resulting in both leading and issues

With all that being said traditional lubing works but honestly it can be a real pain in the ass and pretty expensive to start.  Lube sizing presses are like $200-$500 new , the individual sizing dies are like $45 a pop and lord help you if you need one that's non standard like say .316 . Then you have to go though getting them custom made or reaming them out , then the lube it's self there alot of different kinds and your gonna need to use the right one for the right task. Like wanting to shoot high velocity rifle cast bullets at 2500fp requires a different lube then say low velocity pistol. Then some of it has to be heated so you need to buy a heater for your lube sizing press and on and on.  It works amazing most will tell you it's the simple " all you gotta do is" way but for the way I like to do stuff it's just annoying as hell. I got $400 with of lube sizing gear and just bring myself to use it yet, just too much hassle not enough versatility and the cost 🤦

So now we got the basics down in come powder coat. Powder coat is basically a super tough polymer type of deal that's when done properly will act pretty similar to how a copper jacket works on a modern rifle bullet . Not exactly the same but kinda close .It's pretty heat and abrasion resist, tough as nails and one of the best things is it's cheap. To powder coat bullets all you need it's a plastic container with a lid , a cheap $20 toaster oven , and your powder coat which even the really really high grade stuff is only like $40 a pound max.  Drop you bullets in your container add a spoon full of power coat , put your lid on and shake it for about 5-10 min.  Them most just dump them on to a little hardware cloth pan they make shake them really quick to get ride of any extra powder coat then throw them in the oven for 15-20min and boom their done now you can just use a cheap push though sizing die that fits I to your existing press and your done. And if don't right your bullets will look like this

Now you can get more anal like what I do where I stand them up or like some guys do and use an actual powder coat gun but that's more upper level stuff

It don't come off lol..will also let you use a softer lead for the velocity then you usual traditional lube . When that stuff you gotta balance your lead hardness with the type of lube your using  for higher speeds powder coat....well nat as much.

This is actually a record round from my .22hornet. went though a water filled can @100yd skipped off the hard dirt berm and found it the other day over the hill.

Can't tell as well because of the dirt and grime but the PC stayed on very well

And after check the hardness on that batch of bullets they where way softer then they should have been for the velocity of this load , BUT after shooting a few dozen of them I bore scoped my hornet and is squeaky clean lol.dotn think it would be like that with traditional lube and that soft of lead .

And as far as the color, well you have a couple hundred different colors from different companies ( this stuff is really for the auto industry and the like) so why not make you bullets look cool lol ? I mean seriously you have have anything from a clear that makes it look like just a regular cast bullet ,to what I've been doing to prismatic pinks and purples. I know a bunch of people who will do it as a identification thing , like if it's green it's +p ammo ,red is hard cast , purple  is soft and so on,  other people will do them for their kids or wives . There was one guy I talked to wholes kid loved Legos so he did a bunch of yellow ones and the kid pained little Lego people face on them, apparently though it was beyond cool to shoot his custom Lego bullets 😂 also some colors from some companies are just known to be good.

But  honestly alot of it is just because it's fun to make a bunch of colorful cool looking bullets , I mean same reason alot of people do custom paint jobs on their guns too, I mean it's more then just a tool to alot of us. Like the guns I use alot are all extensions of me and my personality same with a lot of my ammo lol
