But like you say once they get that fish after sitting by the bank for days it's got to be worth it. It's not for me. Id much rather stalk them on the top. Seeing them come up for that bit of bread , pop up , dog biscuit. Deer hair look a like biscuit. I've just bought this off temu. Instead of the line being in the water spooking the fish when they come up for the bait. Sometimes when they notice the line or touch it they roll away. Well this just has the bait on top of the surface hook out of the water. I've tested it in a bucket sits well. My lad used these... Ideal for spooky fish.. 3 Quote Link to post

Just my experience mate, but all these brightly coloured widgets and black and orange heavy controllers are a waste of time. The best thing for surface fishing is a good old fashioned clear bubble float…..they come in 3 sizes and will cast a mile when topped up with water. I used to fish them semi fixed just using a float stop as a stopper because they will easily pull free. A 6ft trace of drennan double strength in 10lb, it’s a pre stretched but when coupled with a normal stretch mono as main line it’s fine. Kamasan B175 in a 6 or 8 tied to the trace knot less knot to form a small hair. If you are using chum mixer, which I used to all the time, I’d cut a piece of cork the same size as a mixer for hook bait and it sits right on the shank of the hook…..the beauty of cork is that you never have to change it. Two big sacks of mixer to get them going and if it’s windy it’s better, carp love to feed off the surface in a big warm wind…..I’ve had carp off the surface in +force 5, big white caps….no bother. Like most things keep it simple. A 30lb common taken off the top on a bit of cork 20 years ago ! 4 Quote Link to post

Should imagine you would have plenty of game , predator and sea fishing where you are?I know Ireland is known for it's bream, roach ) hybrids and tench fishing..what's the story with carp out there?..I'm not a fan of fishing for snottys(wouldn't go out and target them by choice)...but when they are 7/8 lb and constant, you can have a busy day, plenty of action Quote Link to post

I have never done much predator fishing and knew nothing about it, but lately I’ve been studying it a bit more and I’m going to do a bit as they seem the only specimen size fish to be at here. Carp are pretty much non existent, they are classed as an invasive species but there are a couple of man made complexes with them but that wouldn’t be my cup of tea at all. Theres some lads in Northern Ireland who have created some decent carp lakes which we would be more familiar with, they have done great stuff but it’s a 3 hour drive for me and a bit of an epic which my circumstances no longer allow for. Bream are small here mate, I’ve had them to 12lb in the U.K…….decent for a day on the tip or the float but that’s all. Access is also a story here, lots of lads have a boat but I wouldn’t be into a boat and without one getting access on some of the big Loughs is narrowed down a lot…….so for instance, one near me has about 5 swims bank access on a lake of 2000 acres ! Lough Ree at 26000 acres also has minimal bank access when you take its size into account. 3 Quote Link to post
