Their opinions were sacrosanct. The "spiteful" kids also held power because of their sporadic violence. Now both groups are pretty much redundant. Big business holds the power now in the form of fast food joints, bookies and massive car parks. I often wonder about kids sense of self identity nowadays. In the old days we had 'uniforms__ Ben shermans stay press trousers brogues or boots. Kids these days seem to recycle fashions and have no distinct look. I think that about fashion today....perhaps every older generation did in the past though.

jukel123 9,424
I was born maybe two hundred yards from the dock gates and about fifty yards from The Fox pub. All my family and my wife's family worked on the docks. The Fox was basically a brothel. Seamen from all over the world would descend on The Fox looking for sex or a fight. The tables and chairs in The Fox had to be screwed to the floor-seriously. I know working class people have a kind of inverted snobbery where they try and outdo each other when talking about their poor childhoods but The Fox was officially designated the roughest pub in Europe. So there! As kids we used to follow the blood trails from the pub hoping or dreading to find a body. The whores were often tarts with hearts and were always good for a few bob at Guy Fawkes night. Sometimes we would stand at the door of the pub and ask if my dad was in the pub because my mam needs money for milk. They would often cough up a few pence. Sorry girls. Isn’t amazing how our society has changed in just 50/60 years to what it is now and your right it’s almost like the Monty Python’s sketch with working class people, we used have dirt for dinner they used to shoot you in the pub and you only asked for a bag of Chrisps that sort of thing I suppose it’s a sort of pride thing in a strange kind of way.

You are right. The change has been unbelievable. I walked to my sister's house after watching a night time match at Old Trafford a year or so back. I swear I did not encounter a soul all the way back. It was all underpasses and deserted streets. I admit I felt vulnerable. When I was a kid there was always people whatever the time of day. Suppose they imprisoned them all in high rise flats.

Didn't Frank Bruno used to train there back in the day ? He's nobody famous mate just another scruffy little oik out the flats ....in them days if you boxed for West Ham or Repton as a kid you would train at The Oak on a Sunday morning to be around the big names of the day and seasoned old timers etc....yes Frank trained there as did many others it was probably the most sought after gym for sparring in the country at the time.

I'll have a look through that mate cheers.....they must have cleaned the bridge up a bit for the photos eh Tate & Lyle is still just about there but going through an almighty battle not to get flattened, but it will.......i think the regeneration of the area is great but the down side is it creates an even bigger gap between the wealthy and the poor its like Rathbone Market when the flats went up the council promised all the stall holders it would still be a market.....the space is there to still have it but do the high flyers who bought the flats really want to buy cheap tat off the market,no......and the old timers still there will just head up to Walthamstow......its the only problem with urban improvements it just creates bigger gaps within the community. Still remember the scenes after he lost to Hagler. Fought a stupid fight given his opponent. That fight had a racial element to it if I remember. Some things never change. Funny to think that fight was over 40 years back.

It brought a memory back in a flash. Now reckon it was early 80's and I was a little hippy type at the time, would had been up the smoke to see either Frank Zappa at Wembley pool or Crosby, Stills Nash and Young at Wembley. Christ know where we was in town but went into a pub just like that sat at a round table in the middle and decided to have a game of cards. So asked for a deck no problem and sorted 25 cards we needed out from the pack to play a game called Euchre. Well Euchre was played in just about every Pub at the time in the West Country at that time not so much now but still a bit of league. As we started to play we drew a circle of mostly older chaps all around us that started to get a bit stroppy as they thought we was students on a wind up. They had never seen the game so we gave up playing laid the hand on the table an explained how the game worked to get us out of trouble, most went back to the bar. Half a dozen stay and we had a bloody good laugh with them. Funny how things turn out sometimes. Cheers Arry I know a few old chaps still playing in euchre league now. But no youngsters wanting to play. Same with the skittles the divisions are slowly getting smaller again no youngsters really starting teams anymore which is a shame

As i remember he had said he would never lose his title to a black man.....ooops. It would be fair to say there was a large contingent of NF in the arena that night i always remember Harry Carpenters commentary " people are throwing beer cans into the ring one just landed on me "..........not the cleverest night for British boxing unfortunately. jukel123 9,424
I remember him for his fights with Finnegan. Close decisions over 15 rounds. I used to kind of look up to him because he wore the same type of clobber and had the same type of hairstyle as me and my mates had. To be honest, although he fought a stupid fight against Hagler, he would have been well beaten whatever the tac tics he had used. Hagler was at a different level imo.
