As I said I think a lot of it comes back to how we conceptualise children and young people and how we structure our social car systems. I was more thinking of the actual care system though rather than ad hoc sports clubs etc. Realistically CRB checks don’t do a huge amount there. Jimmy saville had a CRB in place ....

Unfortunately a lot of things which make other countries stuff work we would be fundamentally opposed to. Like physical contact with children in your professional care (not as a foster parent) and many other things. The basis of all of our issues comes back to how we conceptualise children and how our system has been structured around this. Our schooling system is the same. But again mate, it’s our society not the rules……the rules are there as much for the protection of the adult as the kid ! We live in a world where random f***ing arseholes get themselves a hobby as a “peado hunter” on Facebook, everyone is prepared to accuse other people of the most howling things with absolutely no fear of a comeback if it proves to be bollocks……never bothered me, if a kid hurt themselves at football I helped them although there was always another adult present or I couldn’t run the training. I knew my intentions were sound and I also knew that I’d have no problem putting anyone who ever said anything horrible and false about me in a coma…..but not everyone is like that. As I said, the terrible has been normalised….that’s an adult, societal thing and it’s reach is everywhere. We have to change to whole compass of our society before we can even begin to get it right with vulnerable kids…..or any kids for that matter.

It’s not unusual for random strangers to talk to kids and interact with them. Kids will actively go up to people. I get it all the time, some random persons kid realises I speak English and they want to sit on ya knee and chat away Used to freak me out tbh, now I’m just used to it. It’s like our Jess. When she comes over, everyone is kissing her cheeks and sitting her down, treating her like a family member. I would agree with your words. Kids should be loved and protected....dodgy feckers should be beaten severely... I remember on a recent carpet buying trip to Turkey,.. there was a beautiful fat baby boy, sitting with his parents. It was great to see him getting hugs and kisses from everyone on the plane...he was like the communal baby... By complete contrast,.. I was trapping Grey Squirrels in a local school, and as I made my way up the stairs into the roof space of the building, a group of young lads were rushing madly down the stairs. They were cheeky wee feckers, and in common with many of today's teenagers, they were soon taking the piss out of an old codger in cammo.. Pretty soon we were all having a wee spar and basically, just fecking around... My chaperone was the Head Caretaker, and he grabbed hold of my arm and said, "Mate, don't interact with the pupils, we are not allowed to make any physical contact with them"... I was shocked,..as were my youthful assailants,...I did not realise how far certain rules had gone... We all know that youngsters have to be protected, but I wonder if this new political correctness can sometimes be taken a tad, too far...Whatever,...rules is rules I suppose,. but, I do think that in some instances, kids do need a reassuring hand on their shoulder...It's a hard old world out there and not enough kindness towards them... I had a hard time as an unwanted child,.. I feel if someone had shown me a bit of love,.. I might have turned out better.. Stay safe now lads,.. kind regards, OldPhil.

I used to get clipped by the old lad up the road for garden creeping b*****d always grassed me up to me mam and dad too, which inevitably meant another good hiding when I got home but in the same breath he’d always be there to help if one of us hurt ourselves, was always happy to lean on his gate, have a chat and tell stories of his youth and what they used to get up to. Imagine, a group of young lads on their bikes, on a summer holiday morning all gathered around an old bloke telling us how to make dry ice rockets and bombs ffs Nowadays he’d be labeled as some wrong ‘un for wanting to talk with young kids.

An old boy I was best mates with for years here, lost his marbles and passed last Jan. He was wandering around his building with no idea where he lived. Obviously due to Corvid I couldn’t even be there for him. That bloke loved my daughter, was a complete mad head laugh on a night out and wouldn’t ever back down, took no prisoners He used to roll a spliff at the bar (he was 67) and stand outside puffing the smelliest weed you’ve come across and tell the youngsters it was very nice zero fuucks given. He went from hero to zero in less than a week, then Corvid claimed him.

In my building we tend to look out for each other. My neighbour had Corvid last week and every time I went out I’d ping her a msg asking if she needed owt. I’ve had knocks on my door over the last 18+months asking if I’m ok or need anything from the shops etc. I can mind about 15 years ago I moved to a new area in Preston. Straight away I was chapping the doors and offering free meat to the oldies, introducing myself, cutting lawns etc all because that’s how I was raised and I wanted mine to be raised the same. In the beginning I was met with nothing but suspicion. That’s a poor way to live. People refusing, saying I’ve got no money etc… jog on, it’s free love.
