I got chased down the road one night by a bloody badger , tried to protect hedgehog and suddenly badger turned and started to run after me , I wouldn’t minded but just had 10 pints of badger beer

Some shite written on here by people who should know better .The badger is no more than a protected predator whose numbers have been allowed to grow out of all proportion .

The cull has and is working very well from what I can see .More species of everything about now that were once predated on to the detriment of the species .Anybody thinking brock is a benign fella have a look at my vid in the Night  vision section of a sow killing a chicken to feed to cubs all caught on thermal camera .
No one wants to see brock gone just managed as we do foxes rats and other pests .

The antis have been a minor irritation  from what I gather locally ,causing no more trouble than for any other form of hunting they dislike .Pretty pathetic actually .
Mays rankings along with others quickly became a memory as well as the threats promised .Again pathetic .

A touchy subject,  badgers are a powerful and deadly killer of anything it can get it's claws on.  We have a big chicken farm close to me where the farmer was convinced it was foxes killing his birds until I set up the trail camera, then he knew what was killing his chickens.  They are protected and that is that, although it makes me laugh when the general public think they are cute and only eat snails etc, if only they knew and watched one ripping a hedgehog into pieces while the poor little bugger is screaming out loud, I have, very upsetting to be honest.  Nasty b%stards and should be culled everywhere.

On a different topic but loosely connected subject in the sense that all animals are cute brigade, we have had some misguided party release otters in a local river so now there are loads of dead fish remains some of which are big pike, perch etc  and now they have started entering garden ponds killing koi.  I know it seems to be a good thing to release them back into the wild but really the cost of the damage is not fun.  A friend of mine who used to own a fishing pond had otters getting into his pond, it cost him some large carp and a few thousand pounds to have otter netting all round his pond.  Sorry just niggles me.

There is a flight pond on the shoot I work that is fed by a small stream and the water is gin clear . I stocked it with small carp and started feeding them . I used to hang dead foxes from an overhanging branch and the maggots used to drop in and I’d watch the little fish come and feed . It was a nice little place to sit and eat my lunch and watch the carp swimming around. They grew quick and I started to imagine myself selling day tickets. Anyway my dreams were shattered when we were visited by a “Harry Potter”. I’d stocked it with 60 carp and they were about the half a pound mark when happened within days he’d had the lot . 
      It all sounds very lovely, having Otters about, and I can remember watching “Ring of bright water “as a kid and being horrified when the guy clubbed it with a shovel . But if you put that shovel in my hands now ????

This is a local match lake with a much bigger lake next to it, it USE to hold some good fish now it looks like a compleat shit tip:( re wilding is bollox

There are always going to be problems with any predator. The whole issue is and arises from Urban Conservation Conspiracies about natural balance and that everything is cuddly and if you leave it alone the countryside will find it's own balance and fluorish. The trouble is those self taught conservations have learnt this from Green extremists, hippie camps and internet social media not Universities. The reality is and will always remain, man has unbalanced the countryside with crops, and this side of everyone starving, that isn't going to change. The only answer is and will remain to artifically balance the populations of all predatory or pest species by control unless we want to see food shortages and certain other species become outcompeted or starved. Unfortunately trying to tell those people who know better is like trying to sell fridges to eskimos as they simply believe you're trying to sell them your version to support your a blood sport, not the truth.

The only way I can anything changing will be if the Government requires schools to give lessons in Conservation conducted by Officers from the Environment Agency / DEFRA. As if teaching Unions will ever let that happen.

Just think how much that bloody lot cost and the cost of a big carp can run into the thousands as well. Nice looking lake Si, is that where you were going today if you weren't feeling so OLD.

Barley straw - takes time to decompose though. A weed cutter as well is what's really needed.

Agreed Alsone, barley straw is effective on blanket weed but very very slow to work.  A good 'Y' blade cutter will soon rid any pond of  heavy weed.

Yeah you can buy the extract but since it became popular in ponds, it started to cost a fortune. 500ml was £17 last time I saw some. Take a few bottles to treat that lake!

You can't beat good hard work to get rid of any weed. I hate the idea of chucking chemicals in and waiting ages for it to work. 

We had an infestation of Canadian pondweed 2 years ago in our pond which can be very invasive. We spent a couple of hours a day for a week yanking it out by the roots and not one bit of it has come back. Touch wood.
