Well our first shoot of the year went well. It was cold but dry and a bit of sun appeared. Bag was 122 head comprising of 57 duck 56 pheasant 7 partridge and 2 pigeon. My own contribution wa

It’s been frosty the last couple of mornings, it’s very welcome , hopefully it will kill a few bugs . Unfortunately the Maize and cover crops don’t like it and they will soon be unviable as a drive .

Just been out this afternoon for a couple of hours with the .243 to try and daytime call a fox which I saw a while ago. Anyway no show from Charles so decided to stalk the wood and see if any roe were resident. 3 white arses went bounding off through the trees so I thought my chance was gone. Next I spotted a squirrel so gave it a 100 grain pill ? Anyway when I got to the end of the wood I spied 3 roe , a doe and 2 buck kids. I had a fantastic stalk in on them through the bracken in the wood and ended up about 70 yds from them but the only shot on was the 2 buck kids as the doe was facing away from me , so was waiting for her to turn when someone fired a couple of shots from a shotgun which alerted her and off they toddled. I was quite relieved actually as didn't fancy the drag ?

I used a tradition lamp to get this fox.

It was a bit of a fiasco. At near 150yds I shot as the fox looked at me only it appears it was looking back at me along and over it's back so my bullet ran up its pooper! That's a big ask for a 20gn bullet and a second round sealed the deal as quick as I could! The first shot didnt vent the lungs. Had I realised I would of waited for a better shot.

Went on to hear two others barking but never saw them.

Well done , really surprised you didnt lose it. I once shot a fox with .243 as it was going over a dry stone wall up the pooper , I had to trail it for around 200 yds up a wood in the dark but luckily caught up with it. They can take some punishment.

The .223 was the weapon of choice for the walk around the new spot, when I got there it was like daylight with the moon so didn’t hold out much hope for a fox, I did see one but it was towards the front of the farm and the backstop was a house ?. I had a good walk around checking  the lay of the land for a couple of hours, having a call in a few places but not seeing a fox, I did see 7 roe and he is keen for me to supply him with venison. When I was leaving the lad came out to see me, he said I can come whenever I want and next time I’m out could I get him a hare, I said “I’ll get you one now, there’s half a dozen in the grass field” so I walked to the field and took the first one I seen through the scope, I paced it out at 89, and yes I went for a head shot with the .223, not the best shot placement so shame on me, just as well he wanted the back end ?

Use to get an old boy the occasional hare. He particularly liked the blue hare from when I use to go scotland.
