Unique Carved Lurcher Antler Opinel No 12

Recommended Posts

Here Jok your always trying to hang out someone's arse, as far as being a farmer I'm not and as far as my knives being sharp the older puma ones will certainly be holding a better edge than those cheap opinels

Ok guys so what is it worth? If anybody on else on here had made it and worked on it what would you charge for your time?

If anybody who makes one charges £10 per hour for their time, take into account of the cost of the blade and others expenses you would be lucky to break even.

Cracking job Gruff

would you pay £295 for an opinel... no one is disputing the quality of work

I agree with the opinel statement Lukey, ..............so if it took you 10 -12 hrs to make that handle, what would you charge on a hourly rate to make it?

Not entirely sure where you are coming from but I know this is a friendly kind of place so I'll assume you meant that comment in the nicest possible way. I can only say that it takes a lot of time and effort to make something nice. Would you kindly put some pics up of anything nice you have made of late. Rust or no rust. Jok.

Jok I only said that I did not think the carved knife was worth near on £300 when it was built around a cheap opinel blade, you were the one who started the wise cracks but if you think it's worth the money then fill your boots buddy atb

I reckon it looks awesome . In don't earn enough to pay that for it but that's not to say it's not worth it considering the hours it probably took.

it's hard to put a price onit just because something took a while to build/carve or whatever doesn't mean it has value... it is a brilliant piece of work but I think it's a tad over priced but I'm sure there will be alot of people who doesn't... Griffiths makes some wonderful pieces and this is Deffo one of them

Thank you deswal.

We charge out our craftsmen at work at £27 per hr + VAT= £32.40 we have 28 of them and none could put an Opinel blade in an antler let alone carve a running dog. As for time likely about 24hrs work so at a craftsman's rate 24 x 32.40 =£777.60

As for the opinels yes they are cheap and in my opinion the best value for money carbon steel knives out there. Don't know the carbon make up but they preform as well as any 01 tool steel blade i have seen. You would be pushed to buy a bit of tool steel to make a blank for the cost of a finished Opinel. That is exactly why i buy and cannabalise them. When i finish with the blades they are smooth and polished on the back, no new ground mass produce feel. The cutting edge is honed to razor sharp and can shave the hair off the back of your arm.

To anyone If it's not worth £295 to you then don't buy it. If you can't afford £295 then don't buy it.

In the words of Anthony Liccione “If talk is cheap, then being silent is expensive. And many people it seems, can't afford to buy into it.”

I'm a builder to . My comparison would be we've done oak lintel beams for a few of fireplaces we've done . Most are just put straight in without any tweaks etc. One guy tho paid someone a few days wages to cut , notch , mould, sand, hack, stain etc and it looked beautiful . So amazing it's still in my mind . With the cost of the timber and the guys time spent manipulating it it would have been to expensive for most and as some have said on here it's to much . But one guy paid it and he has the nicest lintel over his fireplace I've seen . Might be expensive or overpriced but if you have the money sometimes money's just a number .

Welsh Red. Well said son. Another saying springs to mind. 'Why buy a Roller if you can't afford the petrol'. Jok.

Some must just be "the elite" then  28 craftsmen?

I've put a few in antler and specimen woods. Never had the inclination nor time to carve the handles though.

Nice job by the way but your trying to break a tough crowd here
