This'll give you some idea of the size of target that we have to hit.   A few millimetres can make the difference between a nice clean kill and a screamer.

Ok, I'll stick my 2 pence worth in.........   Now, I don't meant to teach you how to suck eggs but, I think you're looking at it wrong. Different/better kit won't give you better results - that will

A 3-9x56 isn't the best scope. Its just a range of mag and the size of the objective lens. Build quality varies massively! Buy the best scope you can afford and sportsmatch mounts. And don't expect to

Two different rifle/ scope combinations, years of practice and I wouldn`t dream of taking shots like this at those suggested ranges.

To the OP. You seem to be confusing distances. You were zeroing at 40 yards, then you asked about 100 yards, now 60.

I'm sure these lads will be able to tell you a good zeroing distance a lot better than I can, but my point is until you have got one sorted and can hit the kill zone time after time after time, don't go and shoot anything living. Live animals are not for target practice. Wounding is an unfortunate part of our sport and it happens, but it should be kept to a minimum and not because we haven't practised enough.

I don't want to jump on the bandwagon here. But to the original poster, put up some pictures of your groups at 60 yards under hunting conditions.. I for one would be keen to see.

i just want to buy a better scope for the rifle that i have, hitting at target / rabbit at about 60 yards , head shot. thats all, what scope will give me that ? cheers. thanks in advance FT

Why do you need to shoot a rabbit at 60 yards? It's not the scope that will do that, it's the gun and ability.

IMO it's too far for a regular airgun, especially for a new shooter.

I quite agree 60 yards is a bloody long way with a sub12ftlbs air rifle, and as Walshie points out especially for a new shooter, on the subject of scopes a quality 3-9x32 will out perform a cheap x56 scope anyday, you get what you pay for pal, the instructions for your scope assume you will be fitting it to a centrefire rifle, not a puny air rifle, hence the hundred yards zero instructions.

I haven't ever bought a scope new.

All mine have arrived either with a second hand rifle, or bought from ebay.

I have always gone for named brands. Reading the forums tells you which are the good makes and the best models.

Clarity of the glass is better than range of magnification.

A Mildot reticle is a wise choice as you can learn the pellet drop.

IR - illuminated reticle can be handy for dark backgrounds but treat it as a convenient feature rather than a must have.

And... take the advice that is offered as it comes from experience.

i agree, i would never want to wound a animal, iv got my scope zeroed in at 40 metres, but my original question was, what is the next scope above, and whats peoples views about sights ect ect, ATB FT

Spot on advice mate, just about says it all, there is a saying in deerstalking circles, spend as much as you can on a scope, and with the change, buy a rifle.
