Dogs And Ferrets

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't let you within a mile of my ferrets without a guarantee that your dog is 110% safe.. .There's no room for error when a rabbit bolts and the ferrets still attached etc etc.. too many things can go wrong and I for one value my ferrets as much as the dogs as part of my team.

Keep your dog on the lead and if you get a nice bolter away from the warren go for it..but get dog back on lead before it starts going over the holes again.. Save its energy for the nighttime session.

Wish I had a quid for every numpty I've heard say.. " oh yeh mate its broken to ferrets and totally biddable around a warren ". Accidents still happen in the heat of the moment.

I've had a great invite for a couple of week's time to spend the day ferreting with the dogs, then a bit of grub and back out after dark with the dogs and gun.

Trouble is my dog has never seen ferrets, so is there any way to avoid the awkward moment my dog kills my mate's ferrets? :hmm:

That is a light-hearted question by the way, but one that would be handy to know the answer to.

Cheers.

Get a ferret and spend 2 weeks getting the mutt used to the stinker.

why aint every man with a lurcher got a ferret.

Might not have access to rabbits or even bother to hunt them, why have a ferret that ain't getting graft?

The vast majority of lurcher owners hunt the humble bunny,at some time.I firmly believe any lurcher should spend its first season on bunny, after that is another matter, yet the humble coney will learn a sapling lurcher much that will reward it when it may need to step up a level or 3.After a year give the ferret away, until that time any mutt that works with them should be broken to them.As you rightly point out if it don,t hunt scutt it don,t need the effort.

I don't keep ferrets myself anymore but when I get a pup in I always get a ferret before hand, preferable a big hob off a mate for 6 to 8months just to make sure I break them to them, I even break them to birds and cats in today's climate's. I can count on two hands how many times iv ferreted in the last 6 years with the dog but its 100% broke to them.
