neems 2,406
When did they turn to shyt? They still have a reputation, but they're soft, unhealthy and generally useless now. The fact they still have a reputation when they've been completely ruined for so long must mean something. Anyone here have one back then? How would you describe them? General lee 979
A family friend had one back in the early ,s a really good guard dog but not nasty with people then one day out of the blue it grabbed a little girl and dragged her under a nearby lorry by the time she was gotten out her face and arm was badly mauled looking back I would put it down to a working dog (guard, protection) not having enough to do I still think they are the best looking guard dog around though

SHe had to have skin grafts, my dad has a huge scar from when he was trying to get it off her. I saw the whole thing from where I was playing and when I got home there was blood everywhere. Nasty stuff!
Casso 1,261
The yanks used them in WW 2 espically in the Pacific campaign , with all the news reel reports and pics of the dob's and soldiers patriotic homeowners in the fifties went f***ing loopy for them When any dog is not bred for purpose your actually breeding a flaw in the works , I cringe when I see" bred for friendliness " friendliness is a defensive mechanism it's not a grounded feeling in the dog , if you have ever see a true hard well bred animal he is so cock sure of himself defensive displays of weakness are not on his agenda And dobs got bred for friendliness
C556 351
I suppose it's the same with most guarding breeds, most dogs you find will be crap, but if you're prepared to do the work you can still find working lines in Germany etc.

Gaz_1989 9,539
There are still good ones out there if you know where to look. Check out Bellevue kennels in Ireland. My bitch is 10 after Christmas. She lives with my mum and dad. If you can get passed her then I will agree that they are all shit and lack bottle ? I will in fact give £100 in cash to anyone who's posted on here saying they are shite if they will let me video them going through the gate ? She's bang on with my daughter. Absoloute diamond of a dog.

There's good and bad in all breeds Ray. You say your sister had a shit bag of a Doberman. My missus cousin has got 2 ridgebacks. They are 10 stone a piece and struggle to drag their arses off the sofa never mind see what's happening. Fat, useless, lazy wankers. Like the owner. Lol. Get a good dobe and you won't need anything else. It's just finding one.

Look more like chocolate labs. We had one, a big dog, and complete different animal to the bitch. He would bark but wouldn't bite, soft as shit. Gained weight like a lab. Really struggled to keep it off him. Bad hips, legs, joints. Generally unhealthy animal. Had to be put to sleep at 7 years old.
