My grandfather with his dog Bett, which my mum told me my uncle ruined it for sheep working on cattle.

These are two of the three. I traded the third to a very good border collie man from Wisconsin for 2nd pick of her litter. I don't have a picture of her on my phone. The two pictures above are from

When hybridising a herding breed with a running dog,....Temperament, rather than pure physique, would be my main criteria....

This should be intresting i keep a few sheepdogs of various types myself and ive always wondered what type do people favour to use in a lurcher breeding.

To me i would think my fell type curs would be better than the eye/trialing type as there more leggy and upright with a up and at them attitude compared to the others that will creep and stalk low to the ground.

we used to breed from the Hill collie, they were the leggy type generally smooth coated and would face anything man, or beast, of course very intelligent, stamina,((( those dogs were used around Moffat and the Lanarkshire hills, great eye and strong feet, + there nose, could stand up to any weather, graft all day for a pat on the back +there bowl of food at night, put them over a good coursing greyhound bitch, they always said the first cross was the best,((((

In that case i would lean more towards the fell curs, as ive found them to be a much harder tempermant than the eye dog type in general, obviously there will be exceptions.

Out of my dogs i would choose to use this dog (the black and white one) he was probably the easiest dog ive had to train he just soaks up information like a sponge and can think on his feet. I had a litter of pups getting by him last april and they are turning out to be usefull dogs as of now there only 18 month so time will tell but im pleased with how they are going.

well in that case, one with some guts, dogs that will work cattle. i t dont matter what they look like, because there x back to running dog, so your right phil , temp the most important , more so if pre ban you wanted a lurcher to kill foxes and tackle big deer , you deff need a collie x grey with fire in its belly to be more of a all rounder  , any lurcher can spin few rabbits over

The collie x has a bit of a mixed reputation sometimes but like any x you get good and bad examples and genetics will always throw a few freaks around, I don't have a collie lurcher but I grew up with he cross and sometimes I wish I did have one. If you get the right bred one thats a worker with guts, for me the collie cross ticks all boxes for a lurcher they are hardy, brave, clever, can run all day, retrieve, can jump, have a good jacket and have proven to take all game over the years. I think the leggier type are a bit more of a match when it comes to lining with a greyhound - lets face it the greyhound is a big powerful animal.

I think he meant so they aren't scatty nervous wrecks rather than gameness ray. A hyperactive tyre biter would breed some nightmare pups.

For all i know there could be some sort of outcross way back but he would never let on if there was.

Bred him myself mate. Had both parents, which both worked.

His father would put a bull up a tree ?

Sadly missed are both.

The mother was a lovely mover, very flowing if you know what I mean, good on sheep, Father was a pure cattle dog, from very early on,strong dog, good head.

Cheers

ive never worked my dogs with cattle because we just use the quad bike to move them and to be honest my cows go mental when they see a dog in the feild and i would be out of a job if my dogs got kicked and put out of commision by a cow so never bothered to do it, saying that though my kelpie was out one day when we were among thw cows and one broke off so amongst the excitement he set off after it and took a kick to the head and when flying. I thought he was done but he jumped straight back up again and carried on. There tough little fuckers them kelpies.
