Boxing At The Weekend...

Recommended Posts

I reckon Bivol has Beterbiev's  number now , there was always more Bivol could do but I'm struggling to see what else Beterbiev can do other than getting a KO,  I can see the trilogy fight being much the same as the last now.

Scot Dick Mctaggart has died. He won Olympic gold and also bronze. 634 bouts, 610 wins, all at amateur. Absolutely phenomenal. He came from a family of 18. Dick was navy champion, one of his brothers was RAF champ and another brother army champion. I remember him featuring quite often  on the old 14 inch black and white telly we had in the fifties. The whole family including my mother used to admire his ballet style of boxing. He had really silky skills and faultless footwork. Mam used to get really into the wrestling on a Saturday afternoon and almost as excited when she watched boxing. She had favourites and Dick Mc Taggart was her 'pin up' so to speak.

Dick fought my eldest brother in Ardwick near Manchester. ( Ardwick Amateur  boxing club had over  2000 members just after the war) . I begged my brother to take me to watch and he did. He was totally outclassed and I was literally in tears. McTaggart saw me bawling my eyes out and said " your brother's a good boxer son, I was just  a wee bit better on the night." That cheered me up and I felt a lot better lol. I managed to blurt out " you were great Mr McTaggart". I felt a bit disloyal to my brother but it was true.

When we got home my mother asked her usual question whenever any of us came home roughed up.... "did you leave a mark"? She knew not to ask if any of us had been beaten because obviously it happened, but her family pride insisted we put up a good show. She got that from her dad and brothers who all boxed. Without getting the violin out,  pride was all you had, and the way to gain respect was to be nobody's walkover. So I told her what Dick had said to me and she went to bed bursting with pride.

I met him a  boxing charity event decades later in Dundee and he was brilliant company. I remember he told stories of his days as a ratcatcher after he was demobbed. Outside the venue was a big statue of Dick. He didn't enjoy being a celebrity and  didn't enjoy smoke being blown up his backside,  but what an athlete . Top boxer, top man.

Makes a change from the noisy, mouthy Furys. I'm really enjoying not hearing from that lot. Peace. I hope it continues and he stays retired.

There's talk about putting him in with Itauma. Madness, the kid is nowhere near Parker's level.

Looking forward to Whittaker being roughed up in the rematch and the Dave Allen rematch should be a good watch too.

Fabio Wardley V Jarell 'big baby' Miller at Ipswich Town football ground.

It's a big step up for Wardley . Miller is world rated and has only been beaten once, by Dubois.

Interesting one.

Aye, gonna have his work cut out! Just up the road from me, might give it a look. A mate of mine fought wardley in his white collar days, started off well, then got stuck on his arse three times 😬 said he's certainly got some heavy hands!...
