A friend has been trapping squirrels and giving them to me recently . He has 2 in his outside shed killed yesterday morning . Either way I have a use for them but is it safe or good for me to skin/gut them tonight to be put in freezer for eating?

How long after death is it reasonable to use them for eating when their still intact

Trust your nose and eyes

Absolutely agree,if it smells off bin it, if you think it's OK get it cooked! You say you can use it either way? I assume ferrets or bop? Won't matter to them anyhow...

If the first bite is with the eye then squirrels don't stand a chance for me. Someone once asked me to prepare a couple for them and, as if the temptation to lob them in a hedge wasn't strong enough already the long, protruding yellow teeth and Busta-Gonad sized testicles was almost a bridge too far.

Rather you than me no matter how fresh they are but a day or so in a cool shed should be ok.... Makes me gip just thinking about it.

It is underestimated.

I avoid them from April to October. They can taste odd but winter they are nice.

Skinning cold is a pain, carry some bags and skin them warm, much easier.
