walshie 2,804
A guy up the road has a peacock on his land. He also has a black car and the peacock has been seeing its reflection in the paint and pecking at it, to the point he's had to have one side of the car resprayed. Now before you start with all the "townie" comments, can someone please give me the straight answer on if it can be shot or not? I know it's not on the GL, but I also know people eat them now and again, so they must be "killable" somehow. Ta.

Born Hunter 17,907
Only a townie would have to ask such a question...... a bumpkin might not know the answer but he sure wouldn't have to ask. LOL

kanny 21,600
It will only do this during mating season I think. ?.we have the same with garden birds in the patio windows but they only do it for a couple of weeks in spring and there really funny to watch but I wouldn't be seeing the funny side of it if they were trashing my car. Malt 379
I'd have thought it would be more of a destruction of someone elses property issue rather than one of legal protection of its species. Thats if you got caught shooting it of course..

J Darcy 5,871
OK, I will stand corrected here, but, if a wild/feral bird/animal is not named on the schedule list of quarry/vermin species then it legally cannot be shot. You can only legally shoot quarry species and vermin as per the statutes. However, on the flip side, the peacock will not be protected, per se, and there is nothing to stop a person catching one in a cage trap/feeder trap and killing it. However, the peacock may belong to someone so then you'd have to hand it back over to them or it could be construed as theft. It is a grey area of the law and, I believe it would pivot on location of said bird. That's my take on things.
socks 32,253
It's not on the GL and it's not a game bird so in essence it must be the same as a chicken or turkey etc and if the owner of the bird wants it killed there should be no issue ......
walshie 2,804
But Golden Eagles and swans aren't on the GL either and they aren't game birds.
socks 32,253
But they are a protected species .......
