WhiteN 15
Earthcare odour remover bags are meant to be good , they absorb the smell rather than masking it. Quote Link to post

stubby 175
Have an ongoing dead rat smell at a business premises. I have been using Rentokil Rodent Reodourant, which helps to mask the smell, but not working very well. I know Rentokil do a reodourant sachet. Have you used anything good?? Thanks oh the fun of being a pestie, the best tool in this job is your nose, as already stated, find it, remove it, then place a rentokil orchid sachet to remove the smell, which as you have removed the suspected item, will be gone in 24hrs, now the fact that your saying it's an ongoing problem would make most professional pest controllers rule out a dead rodent, as those normally stop smelling after 10-`14 days, anything longer would normally point towards a sewage problem, yes there are times when it could be a hoard of dead rodents, but you would know from your previous pest control at this premises if that was the case, have you been baiting for mice/rats? if so how much bait has been taken, enough for 10 or 100 rodents?? I once had a smell that was definitely a dead rodent, and they had taken enough poison to kill a cow, but we were unable to locate them, in the end we found the lair, after handing it over as a sewage problem, the sewage guys dug through around 24" of solid concrete to reach a waste soil pipe, only to find the lair of around 100 rats, dead ones everywhere Quote Link to post
Matt 160
It's one of the pitfalls of using bait indoors. Ironically, the place I'm currently sat at typing this is stinking of dead mouse.... it's a five hundred year old cottage and even after thirty years of various proofing the mice always find a way in, and often succumb to the bait leaving the inevitable smell issue... As it's virtually impossible to remove the offending corpse, it's a question of jacking up the heat and opening the windows during the day. Sadly, by morning the smell has returned. It's just one of 'those things'. My experience of deodorisers is that they often smell worse than the dead rodents. I'll never forget spilling a bottle of rodent deodorant in the back of a van; the stink was unbelievable and lasted for months. In fact, I think I palmed that particular vehicle off onto a new starter in the end. The bottom line is that you can't do the impossible, and unless they want the disruption of ripping up floors and emptying ceiling voids on the off chance that you find the corpse, they'll have to put up with it until it goes. J Darcy 5,871
Just wondering, and I know it might sound like a daft question, butnare you sure the smell is dead rodents and not years of rat toilets? I have trapped lofts that smell to high heaven and it is the rats piss as i don't put bait in those lofts, trap and remove instead....just a thought? Quote Link to post
Mr Muddy 141
Earthcare odour remover bags are meant to be good , they absorb the smell rather than masking it. I was given one of those bags by a rep about a year ago. I keep it in the car; seems to get rid of any bad smells ok – not that I keep dead rats in my car, but I will fart a fair bit on a long journey. Quote Link to post
stormyboy 1,352
Its not always possible to remove dead ones. I've known them to smell a lot longer than a couple of weeks too esp in winter when there's no flies to accelerate the decaying process. A decaying corpse has a completely different smell to rat piss. Quote Link to post
shropshire mole 190
Thanks for the replies, I say ongoing but in reality about 2 weeks, only a little rodenticide eaten, enough for just one rat. The premise is next to a stream, no rat runs/burrows seen. Others within the terrace could be baiting and the rodents dying here. Socks, thanks for the advice, obviously if can be located without destroying walls, partioning etc then would remove, the loft area is very small and does not go over the area where the smell is worst Walsh, thanks for your very imformative comments, very helpful Edited December 17, 2014 by shropshire mole Quote Link to post
