South hams hunter 8,996
and the dead simple things like shaking a hand properly, One of the most simple yet important things a man could teach his son when we was young.....yet now it seems to mean nothing i think theres nothing worse than a limp wristed handshake from a man looking at the floor............i was a bit of a f**k up as a parent but when my boy shakes your hand you,ll know you cant take liberties with him....i can still see us now practising in the front room....he was only 3 that's if they bother to other a hand. Lads I work with see each other everyday but still shake hands every morning
gnasher16 31,602
To be fair, I can't really imagine ever shaking a strangers hand. Implicit in the hand shake is the introduction, hence not a stranger. If someone just stopped me in the street for the time or directions and wanted to shake my hand there's no bloody way that'd be happening. Hand shaking is for family, friends, aquiantences and associates, people you know or are being introduced to. No i couldnt imagine refusing a handshake no matter who it was.....i even shook a black mans hand once .............in all honesty ive shaken the hand of people ive detested on occasion simply through not being able to refuse a hand shake .....im of the opinion theres a lot more in a handshake than merely greeting someone you can get just as much venom across as you can warmth if you get the vibe right. Editted to add..........shaking hands with a woman, now thats a puzzler.......firm and you might get an " ouch "......soft and you might get a " you poof " . Outlaw Pete 2,224
Shaking hands with a woman, now thats a puzzler.......firm and you might get an " ouch "......soft and you might get a " you poof " . That's a bugger, isn't it, Gnash? I had to shake hands with one, just the other week. Not natural, is it? I just tend to go for the instinctive, short, firm, 'Half Squeeze'. Enough of a full and firm grasp of their hand to let them know you're 'shaking hands'. Not just resting ye limp fingers on their hand. But, I back off at about half the natural pressure I exert ~ and I never try to crush anyones hand anyway. (I've been gripped by some right f**king tree stranglers. Actually been put out of operation for a day or two by one c***! Lovely bloke. Just too fond of the gym and genuinely didn't recognise the power he'd developed) Yeah, with females, I just like to show I mean what I'm doing ~ show a bit of respect for the gesture. But, just enough to, equally, show them I'm respecting Them, by not going all f**king caveman on them and trying to 'dominate' them, physically
walshie 2,804
Couldn't agree more with the limp handshake. When I get offered one of those, I feel like throwing it out of my hand and telling them to try again. I'm still of the old school where you don't shake hands sitting down either. I always stand, even if it's only enough to get my bum off the seat.

I've shook hands with people I'm less than fond of, that's not an issue, infact imo it conveys complete confidence and control. A complete stranger on the other hand that has no real reason to introduce himself to me I would be deeply suspicious of if they wanted to shake hands. To me a hand shake is a gentlemanly introduction between a planned meeting of people for the first time or a greeting between people already known to one another. There's a certain degree of familiarity and trust about it. However once a complete stranger had introduced themselves to me it would only be right to offer their hand as a parting good gesture. Funny old bussiness, who would have thought a simple human social interaction like shaking hands could hold such meaning.
