Never quite got the whole Airedale thing... Here in the UK,..we don't really have the type of quarry for a giant terrier to pursue,.seems a bit of a waste.... 1 Quote Link to post

A lot of people with pets are appalled at the way some hunting/working dogs are kept in kennels and never allowed inside or on the sofa. That's all very well in a normal circumstance when what you see is inferior but perfectly suitable ... In all due respect, your last two posts are a direct insult to this man. You are judging him on a few pictures that he has posted on this forum. I can't see any issue? Nobody has questioned the condition of his dogs. The reason being, they look like they are in good order. He has stated he has different kennels for them etc. In the short time that I've been involved in dogs LOL. I've been to a few places. I went to a mans yard to lift a terrier for a friend a while back. He had the top notch kennels, the type I used to dream about when I was young. The dogs were unsocialised to the point the would bite you, didn't know how to walk on a lead at over 12 mths off age. Some dog man he is, l'll stop at that. Been to many a yard that's not perfect, far from it. My own wouldn't be the best but the dogs that are here are getting what alot are not. I can only say, from my experience with my Airedale, that they (she) is a lot more than a giant terrier. A dog that is as easily trained, and easily as biddable as a good pastorally based lurcher, very intelligent, with a nose that is hound and terrier and gun dog in one, is capable of many things. I have found it a lot harder to train most lurchers than I have this Airedale. When a dog has an innate desire to work with a human at the same time as possessing massive prey drive, is there really such a difference between a Collie and such a dog? Sure the mindset is slightly different, but it is a mindset I can work with far better than that of a Collie: personal preference. 1 Quote Link to post

fireman 10,774 Posted April 13, 2014 Report Share Posted April 13, 2014 No ones said the dogs look in poor health,what DOES look poor is the FACT they are stood on wet straw and it DOES look like they live on those chains in those sheds with NO box or bed to sleep on and only a few sticks and a mouldy old bath to keep them company.If it's not how it looks then maybe a bit better thought should go into the pics as i see what i see and again it don't look good and those collars for such powerfull dogs are unsuitable for 24/7 chain life anyway,sorry for being negative but if i were showing the world wide web i'd put a bit more effort into it than that.. Folk can keep any kind of dog that they choose,..it is none of my business,..I was just saying that , here in the UK,.we don't have the testing type of quarry that is available, in other places...and to maintain a line of working style large terriers,..might possibly seem to be a waste of an otherwise splendid canine.. But as I say, that is only a personal view.. and I could well be wrong... I've not seen one now,.for over 30 years,..but a few foxing lads, back in Wales, kept them for the Hill job... I am not insulting anybody fella I am commenting on what I can see in the picture ... The straw on the floor is soaking ... The dogs feet are soaking hence the dogs are standing on wet ground simple .... There are no boxes in view for the dogs to sleep hence as far as I'm concerned they are sleeping on that wet straw ... The place looks like a shit pit in that picture so my conclusion is the dogs are living in a shit pit .... None taken, and I see what your'e saying, but like so many ultra adaptable and intelligent canines, there's no reason not to keep them going on the quarry we do have. Better than letting them die out altogether IMO. A waste maybe, but for those who really connect with a certain type of dog, and keep it as much because they love the bond they get with a certain mindset, character and personality as they do with a dog's working ability .... yes, definitely worth hanging on to. I get almost as much fun watching mine working the river banks for mink, or retrieving water fowl, as I do listening to her put up game deep in cover. As a 'hobby' hunter, for me it is all about enjoying what we do. Fun dog to be around, and just as happy fetching a ball as fulfilling her prey drive in wilder ways. 1 Quote Link to post

How many of you have posted pictures of dogs out hunting in hard weather?.?. Does that mean that they sleep there? Noooo.
