To be fair, fitness is completely relative to the activity. Is a marathon runner any fitter than a power lifter? Depends on the activity, distance running then yes, deadlifting a 500lb barbell absolutely not, lol. People have different aims and personal achievements.

What's wrong with having a hobby that keeps you fit? Kayaking is great for all your muscles. Your legs are constantly straining to keep you balanced, shoulders, back, arms all getting used to propel you, great exercise plus lots of clean fresh air. Better than in a sweaty gym with guys all staring into mirrors any day of the week lol.

going to the gym is a hobby that keeps you fit.

 

Kayaking's doesnt keep you fit,might be ok for an obese person or someone lacking fitness.

 

same as all those people who claim walkings good exercise,yeah maybe if you're 85.

Alright for an obese person :laugh: you've clearly not sat your arse in a kayak have you? If you had, you'd know how small and tight they are. So, how does kayaking not keep you fit? Have you ever fought a tide? Kayaked for a couple of hours in tidal rivers? I'm guessing not.

I want to gain weight not look like a midget Schwarzenegger from the 80's :laugh:

 

So going off advice given here, I'm reducing the circuit laps and plan on incorporating some free weights in there, my only concern is that I have reached quite a high level of fitness/stamina again and don't want to sacrifice that to gain the weight (plus I have to be careful for medical reasons)

Not read the entire thread so this may have already been said but……………..

 

 

 

 

Simple, thermodynamics the basis of everything,

 

Energy in equal’s energy out no change,

Energy in less than energy out you lose weight,

Energy in greater than energy out you gain weight.

all the rest is rubbish.

 

So if you are really eating enough to gain muscle but aren’t then you would gain fat as the energy is stored, so if you are gaining neither you are not eating enough.

You don't need masses of protein, this is a common misconception. Better a balanced diet so your body is not forced to use the excess protein for energy etc, by eating sensible protein you have room for an increase in fat and carbs which your body can for energy/exercise etc so spare the protein for repair and new growth.

 

So eat more calories and you will gain weight. the substrate, ie fat, muscle etc will depend on type of exercise etc. I would recommend whole body stuff or at least exercises that use multiple muscle groups such as squats. Working the big muscle groups will do a lot of good for heart etc as well whilst the little muscles of your arms etc also get a workout and you get growth. Go for high weight, low reps and I would pyramid the sets. Use free weight as these pull in all the stabilisers. Something like a clean and jerks, squats, bench press as a core.

Remember no pain no gain

If only it WAS that simple but it's not quite that cut and clear when it comes to metabolism, hormone levels lean muscle mass, fat levels etc.
