Locaters

wouldnt ferret with out one myself, i think you can tell alot about whats goning on under ground with one , can give ya an idea on which way, end of warren there working pushing the rabbits to etc, also the amount of times ive got shallow readings and just pushed the spade in and got a quick bolt countless times , a [locator] can save you a hell of alot of time, more time more ferreting imo

I like to use a locator on a new warren, more so if its a big one, I like to watch the ferret drop down to the full depth of the warren, and a lot of the time they go off the scale, I find it interesting to know the scale of a new warren, you wont find this out with out a locator, on warrens I do every year, I generally don't get the locator out of the bag, even though the ferrets are collared, some times you need one, some times you don't, with most folk its the price, not the fact they don't want one ;)

Some people seem to think that locators are just ferret retrieval devices but they also put extra rabbits in the bag. Only thing I don't like about them is the collars catching on the nets sometimes.

I cut my collars down so there is just enough to pull through the buckle

Just my personal opinion.

Locators are good at the job they do (well most of the time) no one doubts that. If I was ferreting on the yorkshire moors I would probably have one. The only problem I have with the locators is, the indescriminate use by amauter ferreters who are just doing it as a hobby, but have neither the field craft or the sense or responsibility to use them correctly.

I have always been a hobby ferreter, never claimed to be anything else. If I lose a rabbit out of a net, or a ferret kills and I cannot retrieve the rabbit, so what, personally I dont give a feck! However, if I was getting paid to clear rabbits then a locator would be a must in my ferreting kit. And every rabbit counts in that situation.

Finders are the bees knees i rember before locators going out with my dad and uncle and i was alway's left to wait on the ferret that didn't show or killed under ground some days i didn't see the family for a full shift ,and any new permission we get the ferrets are collared to see where the new burrows go and for big burrows 400 plus holes there handy for knowing the ferrets still in the burrow . Apart from sitting wasting time you can dig down add a rabbit to the bag and be on your way

iv ferreted since a young boy either with friends or family but most on my own,in 20 yerars of ferreting iv only lost 1 ferret, iv locators/collars ect and if im honest i rearly use them ( i always take it) only in certain cicumstances will i defo use it, if a ferret kills below it comes out quick, as i try to get the feeding right before i take the ferret out, other than that ill collar the other ferret up and get a point to dig from that, before times when I didnt have a locator and a ferret made a kill and didnt come out by dark, i would block all the holes then return the next morning, theres loads of field craft like tiercel have said, and it very good knoledge to have !

Nearly always use them now, but never did as a kid growing up and I can't remember losing a ferret...

I did wait all day for one, finally gave up and walked away when I was at the bottom of the field and looked back the f****r was running along the hedge bottom....

To me it's like going on a long journey without a spare wheel if your serious about your ferret and ferreting you should use one, I can't see how people class themselves as pest controllers when they don't use locators, jmo but I think it's right

Just because some have not the experience to work without them, does not mean we are all the same. Some people have enough faith in their ferrets and their field craft to be comfortable ferreting without locators. I would guess that most of the members on here would class themselves as hobby ferreters, myself included. I have no delusions of being the great white ferreter that must catch every rabbit or I have failed.

I ferret to enjoy myself and get food for the table. There are some on here who are genuine pest controllers but I would say they are a small minority of the membership, there are some that are wana-be pest controllers but if you do not get paid to do the job then you are just the same as the rest of the membership who do it for fun.

Just my take on it
