Joe67 239
have one, havnt really used.. i should... Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
Some ferrets won't stay with a bottled up bunny so I don't think they need a collar. Other ferrets will stay so a collar is a godsend saves waiting and you get the bunny after the dig lol it's about knowing your ferrets. I wouldn't go ferreting without my locator 2 Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
They are a good tool to have, but I have never owned one and never will. And before the righteous brigade start moaning about losing ferrets in over 50 years of ferreting I have only lost one. That fell down a crack in limestone on the brecon beacons, even then I knew where it was, just could not get to it. TC Quote Link to post

Probably no more than any other ferret, they are just run of the mill workers. However, when worked right I think most ferrets are bolters. 99% of my ferreting is in hedgerows, I have found if you work the hedge with the wind at your back so the ferrets are entered on the upwind side of a warren the rabbits usually bolt as they can smell the ferret coming. Does not always work of course, but more often that not it will. Another factor is unless it is a really big warren I only enter one ferret anything over 30 holes I consider big, I expect my ferrets to work a 30 hole warren on their own. Even onthe bigger warrens I always enter the ferrets up wind to give the rabbits time to smell the ferret before the ferret is on them. Only little things I know but they all add up. I do agree though that a locator is a very good tool to have and when people have been out with me and used their ferrets with the locator on it has been easy to follow them in the hedgerows. Hot Meat 3,109
I agree fieldcraft will make the job easier, and so does a locator, use both an it's bound to help, sort of belt an braces job lol, the ferrets I had until recently never needed dug out. Since losing the line tho and getting new stock of had to dig a few bunnys, I don't mind at all and neither does the land owners I'm ferreting for. 1 Quote Link to post
