To those that said reds could not be taken with lurchers, well its a pity you did,nt get out more and open your eyes before the silly ban came into force. I am only talking hinds and biggish pricket,s

Running lurchers is dangerous enough. I value my dogs to much to run them against big deer.

Ban or no ban its not for me. Fair play to man and beast whom, did have a crack at them.

I dont like venison than much either :icon_redface:

Give me leg of lamb any day, bet me dog could tackle them all day long :laugh:

I've seen big fallow bucks make some big strong tough dogs look very silly ...in one case killed .... Also seen some men squeal like girls around them ...

Can it be done?

Yes.

I've seen it with my own eyes, and I owned a local type dog that was capable.

The favourite cross in my part of the world was (and still is) alsation/greyhound. The best dog I ever saw on the job was 'Roscoe', who could take big boys down single handed.

This was all daytime of course; as lamping deer has always been illegal......

I've got some pictures of my old bitch around somewhere, but it would involve getting the scanner fired up....

If you want pictures of dogs with quarry forget it. This was all pre-digital camera days, and the blokes I knocked around with at that time wouldn't have been too keen on being photographed....

One little story for you....

Around twenty years ago I had the contract to control moles on a famous north Devon estate.

At the time, I had a subaru brat, and my old lurcher bitch used to ride in the back every day while I rattled round doing the mole job.

One day, while my back was turned, a small herd of red hinds crossed the field in front of where I was parked up. I was busy putting baited worms into the ground, so wasn't really paying much attention until I heard the unmistakable sound of a big dog going full tilt across the field (a bit like a horse galloping by  ) I put the bait away and tore my gloves off heading for the driving seat.

3 fields away I caught up with them.... dog was breakdancing on a hind so the knife had to be used.... anyway, loaded the fecking thing up, covered it up in the truck bed and headed for home. On route, would you believe it, first person I meet in the lane is the headkeeper. Windows were wound down, and the world was put to rights, all the time I'm hoping the thing in the back is still covered over.....

Anyway, off down the road and feck me, the very next car I meet is the Agent..... Same scenario, but by this time the dog is flat out in the back on top of the deer completely knackered..... "your dog looks tired?" he says, looking down from his Shogun.... "yeah..." I said, "I thought I'd give her a run alongside the truck to wear her out a bit..........

I have never seen it done and i won't be trying it mysef so i'm on the fence here.. but when referring to red Stag's are folk on about the smaller younger stag's or the older big brute's that can be in excess of 450lb in weight..because i would find it hard to believe that two dog's of any kind good stop one of them..maybe a lion but not a pair of dog's.. :whistling:

millet that woman in your avatar looks like shes breaking them teeth in for a red stag

How dare you talk that way about his wife
