I have not heard a cuckoo for donkeys years. When I was a kid the magic date was the 27th of april and one year I did hear one on the 25th. I just looked at the date on my pc and it's the 26th. It never ceases to amaze me how they can turn up the same time every year.

I've studied Cuckoos for years, they've always fascinated me. I normally hear one around now but as yet nothing. I'm following the BTO tracker birds as well Byron. I had an audience last year up the Derwent valley on the Snake Pass. I "cuckooed" several males in last year to within 50 yards. They were going bananas at me and getting mobbed at the same time by Meadow Pipits, wonderful stuff and it made their day for the people watching.

the first cuckoo i ever seen i thought it was a sparrowhawk or some bird of prey but that was when i was younger

done same.when walking at back of me grandads place in early eighties.

it takes a while to tell the differance when you first see one especially in flight from a distance, but when they land on a post or tree and their stooped forward and their tails up high theres no mistaking them
