herdwick 52
Tarr Steps has been damaged/washed away numerous times before. In august 1952 there was a cloudburst in which 5 inches of rain fell in 1 hour. This water flowed down the east and west Lyn rivers, destroying the town of Lynmouth. Water levels at Tarr Steps were reckoned to be 12 feet higher than normal. The clapper bridge at Tarr Steps has always been repaired/rebuilt in the past and no doubt will be again. I have driven through the ford there many times. Normally drive thro' without the water coming in the cab of my hilux.
