Should pup & veteran be able to enter best in show

Recommended Posts

I think a Veteran should definately go to the final !! After all, it should have prooved itself over at least six seasons.

I don't think a pup should go to the final, as it isn't the finished product, growing wise; and has prooved nothing.

Cheers.

Whats a pup got to prove in a show ring.

If theres no pup championship why not put it into over all championship and take its chance.

It may not win but the owner will feel that they got a sporting chance at it.

Just my opinion.

LL.

Pups USUALY have their own final; Veterans don't.

Cheers.

And if they DONT, let them in championship and take there chance.

What would be the point of putting a puppy thru' to the Final ? No judge worth his salt is going to give an untested, still growing pup, a win over mature working dogs ! Of course 95% of dogs at shows aren't "workers", but their owners will insist they are ! Whereas a Pup certainly isn't, yet, a worker, but a Veteran at least could or should be a worker. Far better to let the Vet into the final, and have a seperate Puppy Championship.

Cheers.

I agree entirely that a vet should be in and also that there should be a puppy chamionship, but if there isnt whats wrong with letting the pup into championship, even if the judge doesnt give it a second glance at least it gives the owner chance i nthe big ring. I state again, this is only if no puppy chamionship.

Well, the Pups are usualy on first and the final, obviously, on last; so if a pup owner wanted to hang around all day just to get nothing in the final, that would be up to them. I don't show my dogs now, but if I did, I think that would put me off, rather than give me encouragment. At the end of the day, pups shouldn't, in my mind, be shown untill they at least have their adult teeth, around six months, so anyone showing a pup wouldn't have to long to wait until it was eligible for the adults anyway, and could use the Puppy classes to get the pup used to the ring and being handled by a judge,

Cheers.

There's another problem: you can't necessarily know if a dog is a working dog or not: so can't say that you are only going to put up a working dog. Also, a small Whippety lurcher pup of 11 months old may already look quite muscled up compared to a Deer/Grey of similar age, in which case it would stand a better chance of competing against adults should it get into an overall final. That said, I still don't think that pups under 12 months should be judged against adults.

Also, IMO, veteran should mean at least 8 years old, not 6 as is sometimes seen on schedules. I've known plenty of dogs still in their prime at 6 years old.

I agree with most on here that a veteran should be allowed in the final as Margaret says amounst the the greats provided it has proved it's worth in the field not spent the last 8years being paraded around like a show poodle, gamefairs in the summer and breed shows in the winter .A pup has no place in the final line up ridiculous .

At most shows I have been at this year there was a vetern class. But at most of those shows veterns were not allowed in the final. A few shows did allow them. Dont know why they cannot take their place in the final. ? After all in their lifes they have proved themselves over and over again. Why should they be thrown on the scrap heap because they have got a little age on them. I dont agree with pups. At that young age they need to prove themselves both in the field and in the ring.to take their place with the greats. Have a puppy Champion ok,but no further than that. Just my opinion.

totaly agree

puppy championship is a separate item surely so how the hell can a 7 mth old pup be in a show final Veterans are always 7 and also by themselves and i dont recall seeing them in finals which i think is right unless you do away with that class Pigsy who do you mean with the "harping on is there a veteran class" ?

No pups or veterans in the final, thats my opinion.

why no veterens?

The veteran class was put on to encourage those people who had older dogs to bring them to the shows. Prior to this i don't know of anyone who had a dog 7+ years showing their dog in any of the other classes.
