Ferreting 30/10/11

Recommended Posts

We had high expectations for today. So we set of early, making the most of the change in clocks, we met at 8.00 and set off immediately for the ground.

Arriving, we chose an area that required specific attention, as they are very visible to the customer.

Today was a numbers day.... so there was no messing around, even the junior members of the team were on best behaviour from the off..

We crept about on tip toe, and got he 30 or so nets out as quickly and quietly as possible.. Then, left it alone for 1/2 hour whilst we netted up another warren complex.

We then entered the team of three ferrets, as we thought a warren of this size warranted it. We sat back in confidence with a fully netted burrow, and three competent lurchers to mop up any slips or misses.

we sat...............and sat...............and sat.......... for at least half an hour...Then a single bolt, to the nets. At last...

The electronics said the ferrets were still moving, so we left it longer, until another two hit the nets. That was all... About an hour in total.. The ferrets exited, so we picked up the nets, and moved to the second netted burrow.

Again, three ferrets introduced, and we sat..............and sat......... and sat......

IN the end a single rabbit bolted, to an un-netted hole, and it was loft to another warren, despite best efforts of the four legged team.

We waited and waited.. then all ferrets reappeared we packed up the nets, and had an early lunch... It was quite obvious that the ferrets were getting the run around...

After our extensive lunch..... coffee....cheese sarnies, and the essential alcohol nip (16 year old sloe gin today) we carried on.

We had some good small burrows, and landed 3 easy kills, 2 for the nets,1 for the big lurcher. (Morene)

As is usual for the afternoon we revert to shotguns for some sport, and it was frantic to say the least.

Nice write up and cracking pics, a good day for the kids as well, they look keen.

I take it yer dogs called "Radar" with ears like that.... bet it doesnt miss a trick ;)

How stable are those dunes when you have to dig them out, are the pipes liable to collapse?

Bess's ears work exactly like radar dishes for sure.. She can predict exactly what hole the rabbit is going to bolt from ..

I did start a dig yesterday, i will post the photos when my mate downloads them. It is not too bad to be honest. It tends to hold up quite well.

The older lad is my mates younger brother, The young lad with my dogs is my son Ben, who had his patience tested today..But he'll be back out..

Mal, she called in for a few eye of toads, and tongue of newts with the wife.. She should have some new spells to take home with her!!

We were shooting at the time, she was lucky it was Rich that had the gun, or we'd have had a bigger hole to dig!! Damage was limited to a few bruised bristles in the Nimbus 2000.
