Guest born to run1083
I hear what your'e saying, but getting the dog to look down the beam is the first thing to teach, IMO. And I do think that it depends on your ground too: rough plough, dragged up stubble is perfect camouflage for rabbits: even experienced dogs find it hard to see them and just rely on the beam: most of ours on that sort of ground will run to the end of the beam and wait for the rabbit to jump as even the human eye can be fooled. Many's the time I've walked right over a rabbit in my beam: just couldn't see it for love nor money when I got there, and its eventually jumped right under my feet. Same goes for rape. Grass land is totally different I agree, and dogs learn to spot them fast. think you miss understand me skycat what I'm trying to explain is yes first he may miss a few that squats to start with but he'l learn not just to look for movement, I've seen alot of dogs that when you put the lamp on a squatter it won't run the beam that far untill it rises. to me that's no good I like a dog that will say travel 300yrds down a beam if needed and pick the squater up. my dog will trust me that as soon as I hisssss he knows that there's a rabbit in the beam somewhere and doesn't just look for movement and is only 12 months old, don't like adult dogs that have to walked down the beam. mates use the same method as me and there dog been on the beam only a handful of times and knows how to deal with a squaters already. each to there own I suppose just depends what you want from a dog Quote Link to post

Guest vin
you could also try positioning yourself and the dog between the rabbit and fence line or wherever he is going to be running to..if you can knock him off his run the odds are in favor of the dog a little bit more . yorkshirelad2 24
Hi matey my 11 month old bitch dose the same i got her off carp man on here he has cracking dogs an knows what he"s talking about but didnt have enough work for three ya see i bought sky off him on the knowlege he didnt follow the beam too well its just a case of going out an doing the same thing you did in the clip over an over again. The dog will soon get to know where the end of the lamp is the rabbit just takes time dont think it would harm getting out wi experience dogs too just so the dog can learn its game. Like i said i arent the most experienced but i no this isnt a problem an can be put right in a matter of weeks. good luck Quote Link to post

rapidjenky 97
you could also try positioning yourself and the dog between the rabbit and fence line or wherever he is going to be running to..if you can knock him off his run the odds are in favor of the dog a little bit more . i always do this, i give my dog the best chance possible. i walk the hedge lines and i try to work out were the rabbit wants to be and get in between that and the bunny. as said keep the dog on the slip, walk on a squatter giving your signal noise wether it be a hissss or a word, i just use rabbiitttsss lol walk right on it all the time getting the dog excited so its looking trying to see what your on about and make the rabbit bolt. do it a few times and the dog will realise that when you say it the rabbit is there somewere and he will look for it. mine has started taking bunnys out the seat now after a couple of months of going out a couple of times aweek. saldy he still wont run more then say 30 yards down the beam unless he see`s the bunny, but im sure he will get better as i increase the distance of his slips little by little. my saluki x pup has been out a couple of times and clicked right away with squatters, she started seeing them from the start but she hasent had enough experience yet to give her long slips on them. she`s only been out 4 times. whippet 99 2,613
well what i could make out, you had dog the in the wrong position 1st, and the rabbit just got to upits left. What i do is get dog the facing the rabbits arse, so what ever way the rabbit going to run (left ot right) its there with it. Just touch the rabbit up then as soon as it runs and the dog defintely saw it slip it. Thats what i would have done and i catch fair few with my dogs like this when they are stating out. Bryn caught loads , but started him the same way as i said i disagree i always have the dog between the quarry and the nearest safety the quarry will run , aslong as the lamp is in the quarrys eyes, you would of done everything right. i always walk out round to get between the quarry and its port of call.if you can do this while the filter is on i find once your in this position they genererally squat when you take the filter off as you have cut them off and they panik and make more mistakes. always have the light head on to them so there home is behind you in my opionion.looking at the vid the pup wasnt streetwise enough, keep em on slip until the rabbit moves , when the dog knows theres something at the end of the beam when shes exsperienced enough she will be stalking the beam without a slip, trusting you theres something there, she will get better with time and she will eventually be taking squaters out of there seat. if its first season keep her on slip till it moves , second season start of the same and gain her trust in you, you will know when shes getting there Edited September 29, 2011 by whippet 99 Quote Link to post

I for one like the "Blow yer whistle music" so take your moderators hat off for a minute and give yourself a good slap about the face you infidel. By the way, I think the screwdriver bit is a bit strong, I think you need help or therapy, or both Quote Link to post
