Anyone keep dogs at other peoples kennels

Recommended Posts

No way, not ever. There's too much responsibility on the person who owns the kennels if something goes wrong. And how do you judge if that person is really capable of looking after your dog? OK, if you have a lot of experience, and you're between homes/marriage break up so its just a temporary situation and a trusted friend offers to help out by looking after the dogs, but otherwise no.

Also, the whole thing about owning a dog, especially a working dog, is the bond you build between you. You can't do that very well if you don't have the dog in your own place.

Just thought of another scenario: you are working silly long hours and someone who is home a lot more offers to help out: once again, would have to be a very trusted friend. I can count on the fingers of one hand the people I would allow to look after my dogs for a couple of days: any longer and I'd be pining, let alone my dogs!

While we're on the subject, what do people do with their dogs when they go on holiday? I had a right ball ache when I was going because my dad has two dogs and also has my sisters lurcher when she's at work. I told him if it's been dry for a long time don't take the two lurchers out together and let them off cos they'll knacker up their feet on the hard ground but I know he'd ignore me and do it anyway. Luckily last time I went it was peeing it down in the UK but I don't really have anyone else I'd trust her with.

The things to ask yourself are: do you trust this person with your life? Do they look after their own dogs in a way you think is correct? Are their dogs OK with other dogs? Does this person understand the implications of looking after someone else's dog: for example: are they going to keep it fit, let it off lead (can be dodgy if the dog doesn't know them at all)and very importantly: are they in a stable situation themselves? Or is there a possibility the person's situation could go tits up leaving you in one place and your dog left unattended/sold/given away (it has happened!!!)miles away from you?

He's a sound lad, lives about 20mins away from my mums. Still got time to think about it anyway. Cheers for the replies.

Well your not keeping them but only have them at other peoples kennels....Pointless unless its for a short space of time while your own kennels ar being set up.

Thats all well and good but some folk dont have any option......for some folk simply being around dogs and continuing to have a foot in the door means other people owning their dogs.........not everyone has the luxury of being a hardcore 24/7 365 day a year dog owning huntsman.....some people just have to take what they can get it dont make them any less into dogs ;)
