Which lurcher type have you found to use their nose the best when hunting for their quarry? I have only experienced hunting with collie lurchers and whippets, but the two dogs that stood out the most when came to working their noses were my pure border collie bitch and my beardie/border/greyhound dog.

i think it depends on what form of hunting you do, a lot of lads dont consider a dogs nose as an important quality in a lurcher, a dog with a good nose given the required understanding to use it , is a god send in some cases,

i think most lurchers have more than enough ability to use it but are not given the chance,,its part of a lurchers work thats is commonly over looked,,best of luck,

My whippets got a nose like a bloodhound, no joke. Kept spaniels for years, and even in comparison to them he is impressive. He marks various quarry like a pro. Most of the hunting i do is daytime, hunting up cover, woodland, scrub, mountainside etc for mixed quarry. Running dog expected to find and catch the quarry, and scent and sound are often as important or more important than sight.

the best lurcher i have owned nose wise was a 3/4 grey 1/4 border collie. i have seen beddie/grey and beddie /whippets with excellent noses.

A lot depends on how you raise your dog. Mine are raised with terriers so tends to copy and use their nose before using their eyes when pups.

It is not always a good thing a lurcher using it's nose, especially if it prefers this to using it's eyes. But if the dog gets it right and only uses it's nose after it cannot see anything, or changes to eyes after it has flushed with the nose then you are onto a winner

I've an old bull cross bitch here who works just like a terrier.....a pain when terriers are in thick dense cover, you want the running dog on the outside to catch, not her, she is in the thickest of cover with them

My little whippet bitch has terrific nose on her and uses it extremely well, as has been said most dogs will have good nose but some will never really learn to use it being kept on slips waiting for the bolt

i find colliexgreys have a great nose, and if ferreting they make the job 100% easier . With any dog the more you go mooching with them the better they get. my bullxgrey pup as started to use is nose alot more now, he follows my other dog around and thats how they learn

I think most breeds will use their nose really well if brought up to hunt that way, my sons saluki x has a brilliant nose and my mates little staffy bitch marks sets no probs, i used to have a bullmastiff that hunted hare head down like a beagle.Some will have more propensity such as terrier/gundog crosses but really its second nature for them all to use their noses. Its all in the training and how much you work your dog

i have a collie grey bull grey...she does like to use her nose quite alot, you can see her nose twitching when we pass a fox run/set or even rabbit for that matter.

 

Ive taught her to "have a look" which means sniff and "sssst sssst" means look. She also knows "Listen" which is obvious what that is

hehe i dont know if you are taking the piss or not but i shall answer anyway . Say i heard somthing moving about in the hedge/wood etc etc i would say "Listen" and she will prick up her ears and listen to try and hear were it is coming from

me take the piss never if movement in the hedgerow dog will hear it long before you do weather your telling it to listen or not lol
