Leeview 792
Over the years I seen many ferrets with the tipps of there canines cut off (all rescues), I guessing this is don't to stop the ferret latching onto a rabbit down the bury. Anyway our new ferret had the tipps of his cut off and me and my boyfriend where descussing it and wondered weather my thought was correct. S does anyone know why it is done? can you put a picture of your ferrets teeth up Suzie? Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post

Y.I.S Leeview I was thinking of doing that, we can try and get a couple but as he is new to us he may not take kindly to it and I don't wanna up set him, as he has not bitten yet and don't want to give him an exscus. The vets will take a pic when they deal with the one that needs to come out, but that won't be till next week at the earlyest. Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,879
I've never seen a ferret with snipped teeth or heard of anyone doing it round here but I have seen ferrets with broken teeth, unless you actually saw someone snip its teeth how do you know its not from something else? Is it an older ferret? Quote Link to post

taffy apple 32
2 of my ferrets have half a k9...never sniped either of em...i can only presume they have broken whilst the ferrets have been chewing the mesh of their run...never affected their work or temprament... 1 Quote Link to post
The one 8,592
What Ive noticed is the canines in my older ferrets discolour from the tip down i think it would be quite easy for them to break when there in that state Quote Link to post
canis lupus 1
He going in to be castrated monday, so will have a pic then as they are going the badly brocken one then. They could have been broken some other way but they look to neat for that, I seen ferrets with broken teeth due to chewing bars ect and they never been had a neat brake. This is a young ferret as the rest of its teeth are perfect. I could be completely wrong and they not broken at all, but hes the first ferret I have ever seen with squared off k-9's. CarraghsGem 92
there seem to be a lot of people in denial that theres people out there who cut the canines in ferrets. the canines on the silver jill kit i bought were cut, not wore, they were square, not rounded, in line with the rest of her teeth. this is ireland im living in, its not half as civilised in some respects as the uk where animals are concerned. ive witnessed a lot of things over here that you'd be jailed for in the uk. happening at horse fairs and the like. wont say what as it'd horrify many. there are people over here that believe that cutting the canines of ferrets prevent them holeing up. Born Hunter 17,960
Its a cruel and outdated wives tale and we should all do our best to put the uneducated straight. Ive got a hob I found a few years ago and all his canines are broken, either though work or the twats that dumped him. That ferret will murder any rabbit that is stupid enough not to bolt and is by far one of the best ferrets ive ever worked. Broken canines dont stop a ferret killing, just make the job a little slower. IMO its a disadvantage, certainly not an advantage in anyway. Quote Link to post
Nobby 65
Carraghsgem not in denial here and not saying that some fool has not done this but to say that many ferrets come into rescues with teeth cut but how do you know for sure that the teeth have been cut and there is no other explanation for it and like i said in 40 year of keeping ferrets never seen one ferret with cut teeth. CarraghsGem 92
the rescue who i was talking to personally (this was over 2yrs ago at a show) was silvers ferret rescue/sanctuary. cant speak for them as im not affiliated with them. spoken to a few ferret owners in ireland that have seen it. only for my own experience of it id be as incredulous as the rest of you. i live in rural ireland where old wifes tales are still viewed as fact by many.farmers still look at the roof of a collies mouth to see if its black before they believe its purebred. etc etc Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,960
Old wives tales are rife amongst the hunting community no matter where you are, its usually the sort that know feck all but the one time they actually have been out has turned into a lifetimes experience to all those who will listen at the local. Sad fact is, newbies who start asking about get directed to these clowns and believe them. Only the other day I was told by a shooting man in the pub about how to make a terrier bay. It involved a cat and a washing line... Quote Link to post
