I have never heard of that!! Why not give him a few rabbits instead? Or squirrels? :hmm:

Rabbits have very little nutritional value to a hawk, squirrels do though and also do rats which i have a freezer full of, i would imagine moles being a good food source as well if they could be caught in good numbers, i have heard folk say nothing will eat moles but my ferrets love them.

Normally i bury them after i have shown them to the client, but i have one customer and she has a taxidermist/artist friend and she wants all the moles i trap,i believe she is making a coat off moleskins, at least she tries :D . I can't wait to see it though.

Quite a few things will kill moles if given the chance but only a few will eat em . They turn-up in owl pellets and I guess more than the odd mole-catcher has had traps trashed or stolen by badgers who do seem fond of snacking on moles .

The only human reports regarding eating mole I've heard of come from that Victorian father and son team of dietry experimentalists -the Bucklands . Mole-flesh was not favoured .

Considering these guys once had an aged and very dead leopard dug-up (They were miffed that London zoo had buried it without giving them first choice !.) One can assume that they knew what they were talking about .

As for feeding moles to hawks . I gave some to a keeper of Harris Hawks . The birds apparently pulled the fresh corpses apart and were pretty selective about which bits they ate . Moles that had been frozen and defrosted were totally rejected.

It would be interesting to hear from other keepers of birds of prey who might have tried feeding moles.

Hello to the mole catchers. I only recently discovered these forums & Hunting Life. Lots of interesting stuff posted on here.
Part of my duties as a maintenance man on a private estate is pest control and that's how I got into mole catching. I'd done plenty of rats, mice, wasps and ants etc before the mole hills started bubbling up, so I found an old Duffus in a drawer and went from there. I started doing private mole jobs last year - all gardens so far - and have started generating a useful 2nd income out of it. Just beer money at the moment but more than enough for a few pints. I like the work and am fascinated by all the different traps and their suitability to different situations. I use a lot of Traplines and I'd be interested to have other opinions on them - the good, the bad and the ugly if you like. Although I carry Duffus and Talpex, I've gotten into the bad habit of defaulting to tlines which has revealed that certain moles won't have anything to do with them - they seem to just chuck 'em out the way. They also often fire without catching. Not on every job, but often enough to remind me that there is always another tool for the job. I really like the Trapline, and I'm working on refining my setting technique constantly. Just wondered what other mole men's experiences with them were. And to say hello.

      Just out of interest......

Which trap do you reach for first? You can explain why if you choose.

For me, it's the Duffus every time, although I can see the attraction of the Talpex type traps.
