First Frog Spawn of the Year........!

Recommended Posts

Just been out to feed the fish and was greeted by the sight of frog spawn in the pond already. Daft frog had deposited it on TOP of the netting put there to stop the Herons pinching the fish. Thought it was very early myself, just wondered if anyone else had seen any.

Just checked and I took this on Bodmin Moor on the 1st of March. Cheers, D.

There's a pond in a local forest where we walk the pups and last weekend as we approached it the surfaced was bubbling with frogs (trying to get out of sight from us). When we went for a closer look the whole place was awash with spawn as was a smaller pond that it drains into. Great to see after the winter we've just had.

Wonderful ain't they. Keep an eye out for dragonflies mating on the wing as well. Long term weather reports say this could be a great Spring.

If you are seeing frogs mating and producing spawn you might care to pass the word on to your local nature groups. I know they can be antis but there are issues where we can agree, and one is maintaining biodiversity. Frog populations are dropping all over the country.

Yeah, something to do with a fungal infection Ric? They reckon it could cause a huge extinction of amphibian life all over the planet. Be a crying shame IMO, I've always held the little critters in the highest regard. :(
