what gaurd dog?

Recommended Posts

I have had rottweilers, malinois, gsd, when I was a dog handler and dog trainer,I got a gsd I think they are the best dogs for garding for any job

i agree with fordie,i have a gsd and he is well mannered and definetly knew his job from a very young age with know need for any encouragement, plus hel only bark for a reason.my gardens walled off but if i open the back gate hel stay just beyond that so if your garden is not fenced off you could trust them not to wander off making a nuisance of themselves they are content keeping watch on their property and doing what they were bred to do.

If you want a guard dog its very hard just to genralise and mention various breed IMO.

These dogs mentioned above in general are a far cry from being bred for any kind of purpose, its more about money and exaggeration. Before the breed you need to find a good breeder that takes the original purpose and temperament into account. Not some idiot just breeding the biggest baddest loudest dog on the block with a huge chain thrown in for effect.

Take the Am bull i recently judged at an American Bulldog show in the puppy class and was horrified by the terrible nerve of the dogs, even at that young age. Not mentioning the structural issues and health problems. Yes they will guard but for the right reasons i would be interested to see...fear biters are so dangerous and NOT good gaurd dogs. unless you want a ticking time bomb and huge vets bills sat in your garden please do some serious research into what you getting into there are a handfull of breeders breeding ambull with any real morals, knowledge or understaning of what they are doing.

The Bull mastiff i am not as familiar with. However the bull mastiff that was the original gamekeepers dog, well i wasn't aware they were still around??Majority of the ones you see now are bred for stupidly huge 'bone' excessive wrinkles, lets not forget being noted for their laid back easy going temperament. I would love to know if anyone does now of any breeders breeding more towards the old bullmastiff?

I am biased and will say that i think the ultimate guard is a Neapolitan mastiff - But one that is bred correctly and with function of the dog in mind not the KC type. They are incredibly intimidating to look at, nice and vocal but not a dog that will fly off the handle at the slightest disturbance that i find very annoying.

Our working guard had free run of our land and makes herself known if anyone gets too close. She is not overly aggressive but will step up to challenge is asked. She will think before she acts and is extremely calculated. She is not a liability and a safe reliable and trustworthy dog - I trust her judgment and she is a friendly dog once introduced to people. She guards our other dogs and has no dog aggression which is important to us and a dog roaming wanting to rip the throat out of another dog kind of defeats the object?!

There is a common misconception that a guard dog has to be some crazed dangerous beast, its more hassle than its worth - that for us is not the case but we know that no one will step foot on or property without her say so.

Like is said imo find a breeder that has a family guard in mind when doing the breeding, rather than trying trying your luck with just a certain breed, then you half way there. Good Luck!

you are talking sense there, most breeding has lost all morals. However, i disagree with slating bullmastiffs, not because of the breed but most people will see a 'big scary dog' and not go near the house. Which to me is the point in a guard dog, to look the part and be prevention instead of necessarily being a man stopper.

Thats just one side of it, but i agree with everything in this post a good dog should be the best of both as you described.

If you want terrifying, get a bully kutta if you have no kids. Or if you hate the wife get one and don't feed it and it will eat her. (not even joking apparently it happens) But again thats just stereotyping a breed. ;)

hi all,

we used to have 2 old english mastiffs they were very loyal, obidient, and so easy to train.ours were not the heavist of mastiffs, they were only 15 stone, most of them are heavier towards 20 stone, our dogs father was 18 stone, they were gentle giants towards us and family members, but when they go into gaurd mode they look, and do the job well.they have a tendency to hold with the mouth rather than a series of bites but the more resistance the stronger the hold.

the life expendency of these dogs is not great,a 20 stone one takes about 2 years to fully mature and only lives to about 6 years, whereas the lighter ones live to about 8-9 years,we were very lucky with ours he lived till he was 11 years old,(bless him) there names where juke and henry.

in my opinion these are not the ultimate guard dogs (that goes to the gsd)but mastiffs are good all rounders and i would trust a mastiff more than a gsd.

another dog to be considered would be a gaefelgi which is better known as the welsh mastiff, very nice powerful looking dog,

good luck with your choice my friend,

tillylamp

Getting a guard dog is easy, finding one that suits you is the hard bit!

A lot here have stated a GSD or Malinios would be good but that depends entirely on your circumstances.

A MUST-HAVE for any guard dog is the look. You don't want it for true 'man work' so as long as it looks big and nasty then thats usually all you need. Anything more than that and you'll be having your dog PTS for attacking someone.

When I was looking for a guard dog for the wife whilst I was away working, I drew up a list of qualities we wanted the dog to have, from Must-haves to would-like. Then I got on the internet and researched loads of different breeds.

We chose the Bullmastiff in the end. One of the smaller Mastiff breeds so they don't take up loads of room and cost a fortune to feed but big enough to get the point across! Also being a Mastiff She's great with Friends and family but very wary of strangers.

We couldn't of wished for a better dog. Not only does she look the part but she's fiercely protective of my wife and Daughter.

She's the only dog I've actually trusted around kids, The spaniel, Lurcher or pup were great with kids but I still don't trust them if a kid hits them accidentally, runs into them, scares them etc.

Downsides of the breed are the same as GSD's - the hips. They can have real expencive trouble as they get older if not from a decent breeder.

:clapper: It dont matter what dog you get really, because if it bite anybody, you would be in the trouble. All you need is a dog to make noise,GSD WILL MAKE A NOISE and the rep of them most of joe-public would stay clear.Another a GSDx... if you want healthy type dog ,not to a [grey] because you might still get the soft nature come through GSD=collie, still healthy but can still be nasty as some farm collie' can be right twats.??
