my half x is the same size and the one in the bottom pick is 26 and a bitt all good sizes alot of people say the dogs are too big butt thats a rate load of bollox Was quite surprised by his size - I certainly wasn't expecting it. He's deerhound beddy grey x bull saluki deerhound grey, so not even a large amount of deerhound in him lol. But he definitely took the big genes.

How to make friends and influence people.....

Let it wash. Read some more. Put something different up. The good ones are in there honestly, and they will come to the surface eventually.

There MUST be a consequence to every behaviour as I said further up. Good or bad should get a consequence. Firmer techniques does not mean it's bad for the dog. Discipline does not mean battering a dog. Purely positive does not exist, IMO no matter how many trainers try to sell it, but as Sirius says there's a whole world of difference between firm and heavy handed. What do you do Skycat is a dog disobeys and buggers off to other dogs?

That's definitely the key...again just like with kids Still not convinced that treat/reward based training works though. What do you do when your reward isn't as rewarding as sniffing or playing with other dogs? It depends what you consider to be the reward or treat. Playing with other dogs could be the reward after doing a little training. I do think too much emphasis is based on food rewards. In my experience that gives cupboard love and the dog listens to whomever happens to be the cupboard. I also think that sort of training is a big cause of more over weight animals. What if

Google dog training books and pick your poison. depending on what you want to train. There's plenty of info on the net too. I think all training books are worth a read, it is up to you to decide if you can follow them through. Every dog training method will work if you are consistent and repetitive. I have an old book from the bloke that trained all the Disney animals. Some of his methods are extreme!! He recommends hanging a dog by its lead for aggression. Or nearly drowning a dog for digging. But I like his lead work, simple and it works. Take what you like from different sources.

That's classic conditioning I understand what you mean. The difference between the 2 theories revolving completely on the belief of how a dog views a person. Imitation was the basis of the alpha roll which is still used in dominance theory today. But it only takes to watch it in slow mo to see our perspective has been totally wrong about it, that it is about submission not dominance. We can not imitate the relationship of dogs. I like the dogs with more about them too, I find they have more scope, easier to focus and work with.

Has worked fine with me with all the dogs through my house too. But I suppose it wouldn't make good television. Adding to the food bowl is a positive for the dog and it does not become worried around it's food. Take away constantly and a dog may well become more protective of it's source. I disagree with your grooming analogy. I wouldn't see the back hander as a dominant action to lower pack rank, just a telling off that it's actions were not acceptable, a consequence of it's actions, and a lesson learnt. Or positive punishment in operant conditioning.

I wouldn't hold much faith in their breeding program, and what of those that don't make the grade? I still think they need to do much more to get the breed back on it's feet as a whole. We have a local schutzhund club and it is amazing to watch. They take all breeds too which I liked. Rotties, American bulls, some staffies, but not a single Shepherd.

I disagree. They see me as a dog as much as they see the cat as one. Where's the question Simo? lol. Fear aggression needs a completely different approach, and the breeds also need to be taken into account. Handling fear aggression with a heavy hand will only increase the fear and increase the problems. Very few dogs are born aggressive towards people - they would be no use to us if that were the case - but guarding a valuable resource is natural to any animal including humans. It's not about them thinking you're a dog FFS....let's agree to disagree shall we! ok but I

Not the working lines Raiye, may aswell be a seperate breed to the show/pet rubbish........ I haven't seen any police dogs looking much better.

Have you seen the state German Shepherds are going now? Most can barely walk properly let alone work.

Facts??? I thought that was just your opinion....bloody arrogant if you think your opinions are facts! And it's called a discussion, but I guess if you're so convinced you must be right then it's not possible to have a discussion. As for the dominance being in the dark ages....it's called nature, and that doesn't change with trends! Maybe facts was to stronger word...lol, but there is no doubt the lads training methods are rubbish and much of the dominance theory of years gone by is proven to be rubbish I am afraid. There is no need to completely dominate a dog in most cases

Would you vary your methods for different breeds? A terrier type always benefits from a firm hand and clear boundries, its what they understand best in their small thuggish little brain (imho) where as, as we all know, taking a tough line with a saluki type is mostly a waste of time and counter productive (same for almost any dog with saluki in the mix) Manwork dogs (again jmho) require mostly trained with your mind with the VERY rare instance of firm hand thrown in now and again. So are your saying that reward type training is a one size fits all, works for everything method? Just i

It's not just the RSPCA that have complained about his techniques - it's all other dog trainers, dog organisations, not just pet owners. The excuse the dog would have been PTS is mute. It is no excuse for promoting heavy handed and unnecessary techniques on television. My dogs have received a kick up the arse on occasion but I do not show it on TV as a dog training technique. If some moron tried this with his Rottie it would be front page news, a piccie of a snarling dog and more proof of the dangerous breeds around us. He isn't kicking the dog, but the dog certainly isn't attacking him

Following on from this I am going to demand that every church remove their billboards and messages from the front of their grounds!
