    The first ever saluki x greyhound I saw running up here still sticks in my mind, definately in my book of worst dogs I've seen I remember looking down and this dog watching the course with us, not making any attempt to join in When it did run, a contender for plodder of the year competition

    Doxhope deerhounds originated from dual purpose deerhounds, from owners who at that time worked their hounds as well as showed, and from dogs noted for producing good working stock We never chose a sire from any show ring There are not many of these dogs now, and don't forget, these deerhound people are still the same folk who sent me a snotty letter telling me to stop writing about deerhounds in those "poaching magazines" Let the b*****ds spoil the breed matie...     Got to be bob, especially over here I worked them from 1990 to the mid 2000's The ban put a lot of nails I the coffins of working deerhounds and the show people did the rest The right people are no longer involved, and the right stock are getting less and less We exported to the USA but the dogs were used more for cross breeding for hunting, or show We sent dogs to Ireland and I remember being told of one competition where 3 out of the 4 semi finalists where doxhope deerhounds or from them Just hope the Irish lads keep the breed working It's not just deerhounds that have been

    Well bob84 Ability wise most are average lurcher ability I worked mine as I would a lurcher, and brought them up the same way Lamped them, ferret, hares, fox rabbit the lot Like I said earlier our aim was to keep it a working breed It was doxhope deerhounds, the first cross litters were a spin off to pay for high stud fees and travel costs Im a lurcher x lurcher man when it comes to working dogs, and NO first cross can out do these for all round ability IMO Seeing our deerhounds doing what others say they can't do was great, big numbers of rabbits Organised hare coursing with t

    No matie I have a friend in bedlington who has continued what I had lurcher wise to a degree, hes got some cracking dogs, might not win a show but kill everything going If I want a look out I go out with him or a few others I know Nothing comes into chateaux doxhope that can't be flushed down the bog when it dies

    Aye My dad was a stockman, he was interested in all breeding of anything, he had an amazing understanding of genetics He bred them I worked them, perfect combination If I saw something of interest on the coursing stage I would tell him, he would sit for ages with pedigrees he sent away for and say yes we will use him, or no he's no good for us People with leeks used to come to our house and get my dad to work out strains of leeks for him It's not just getting a good strain of dogs, the difficult part is maintaining it..so when my dad died yes that ended my association with keeping do
