  2. Yeah your birds are probably well bred birds. Not the type of thing I was referring to.
  3. They will lay mate, just not that many as last year I'd say about 25% less. They just need a bit of spring sunshine in there backs. Ther not old but when you look at comercial egg laying flocks getting rid at 12 to 18 months a 3 year old bird is well passed it's best. Still a layer but not a good one. Like i said don't over feed. See how it goes this year it might pay to replace them with some p.o.l.'s next year. Also the head twitching is possible worms gape worm so your need to treat that ASAP All the best?
  4. To be fair the rhode/Sussex cross is a Great bird but, coming up for three years old I wouldn't expect any world beater out of them. They will start laying but when they do you not going to produce a great number of eggs. These pure breed crosses tend to put a bit of weight on as the get older, so you don't want to be over feeding as this won't help with there laying and no mixed corn either the corn makes them fat, just a light scatter of whole wheat. ?
  5. The trouble is poultry keeping has rocketed in the last 10 years. Everyone's having a go at the good life and don't realize how much hard work it really is. Stupid tv programmes that make it look like anyone can do it. Not realizing that you have think about your livestock before yourself, being home to shut your birds up every night or mr fox will wipe them all out. I had a lady come to my place she said I have 6 pekin cocks fully grown in my garden do you want them? I'm getting complaints about the crowing.i said I would take them but I was going to neck them and feed them to my dogs. She sa
  6. It's good to know we're all on the same page with this it's something that bugged me for years. I'm all for people getting into poultry. Surely it's border line cruelty if there not getting chucked over a fence there bound to be scraping one another when breeding season arrives not enough hens to go round so kick ten bales out if each other and the hens get trodden to much and get bald backs. This little poultry enterprise turns into reality.
  7. Yes mate my mrs bought when out shoping. It's cheap I think it was buy one get one free.?
  8. Had one never again plagued with head gasket problems.
  9. Yeah I've read loads about the yanks using this method. All I can say is it works for me?
  10. Yeah I go to this one mad4it it's actually got a bit better there since they started grading the birds.
  11. Hi everyone just having a rant. I've been breeding poultry for around 20 years now and I defiantly don't claim to know everything but always like to learn something new of a fellow poultryman or women. But when browsing the internet or magazine which I tend not to buy anymore it really winds me up when people have had a go at breeding birds and have a load of cockerels left over and are trying to get rid. My point is, if newcomers to poultry have a go at breeding some birds which i think can be a great thing to do they must also take the responsibility in having to deal with surplus birds ie m
  12. Sorry haven't been on HL for a while as the above says your get all the info you need. There's some good birds being sold there one if the better auction IMO. There's a load of s**t around now days.
  13. All I can say is that the bleach in the water works it sorts canker, coccidiosis and worms I have just bought a buff orpington cockerel after a couple of days at home he started coughing, typical gape worm symptoms. I put a teaspoon of bleach in a 4 pint drinker he's been on that for two days now and already is showing signs of improvement. I'm probably going to keep him on it for a week and then back on just cloves of garlic in the water. I don't think garlic treats worms but it is a natural antibiotic and I believe makes the gutt less habitable for worms. As would Apple cider vinegar as well
  14. Salisbury poultry sale once a month. Gets some nice birds there mate?
  15. I've reared table birds for Xmas,we bought 100 sassos which I think is just another name for a Ross cob. I personally would never have them again. They eat you out of pocket put weight on to quick, struggle to stand up some just die. As thy above says they can grow to some very big weights but we're not a pleasure to keep at all. But unfortunately if your rearing birds for buisness these sorts if birds are what you have to use. I think there are more breeds available now, but just for yourself at home the indian game x is hard to beat IMO ?
  16. Indian game x Wyandotte or Sussex IMO
  17. Get them now!birds Hatched after May never grow as well in my opinion they get less day light hours. People are hatching chicks all year now which I think is wrong the birds never grow well. Best of luck

  19. Fair play doing that a 90. Could of put the lid down on his ferret box a bit lighter though, bit rough for me but. But good luck to him
  20. Does it mater what way you would cross them?
  21. I've recently just bought my first dog for work, since then I've read a few books and thought that my old lab x golden rt would be a useful dog to be crossed with. He's always been very game ploughing through cover nose down hunting away catching a few rabbits while were out. Seems I wasn't they only one thinking this.?
  22. It just goes to show that it's not safe to leave your dogs on there own tied up, someone's always lurking about ready to nick them. I've never done it and never will.
  23. Nice 1.fair play! Maybe the old bill do care ether way, home now that's all that maters ?
