Yep we had the top loader & cable remote for years! We didn't bother with the remote however, we actually got out of our chairs & travelled the 2.5 metres to operate it. Can you imagine the hardship??

Before my parents bought a VHS recorder. We rented one out with the videos! We were living abroad at the time & I remember my old man coming home with this big old machine & tapes of knightrider. It was the future!

How did we live through those dark times? Just sitting down to watch Quantum Leap that you'd recorded from 2 nights previous, only to discover your mum had taped Coronation Street over it from 12 minutes in!!!

Of course it was there, for some. If you talk to my parents they will give the same answer you have, why? Because they were just simple ordinary folk living small lives in a small town. They had absolutely no interet in the music, political climate or cultural shifts. They just remember having more money in their pockets. Though many people had a different experience. Of couse it's been much hyped & stretched out throughout the whole decade, rather than just 2-3 years of something that happened only in some cities & some lives, but the magic was there, however brief, for some. My first clearest memory of feeling really good in clothes was in the last year of primary school at the end of year disco. My Sergio Tacchini 3 button cardigan in lime green courted much attention. I thought "I'm the bollocks"

The last couple of springs I've enjoyed Lapwings. They seem to arrive around march. Not that many, but a few pairs spend their days on the fields behind my house. The arial displays, the calling & the distinctive sound of their wing beat is pure magic as I walk the dog. Plenty of hedgehogs as well. There are no badgers found in this area.

Obviously that figure may not be correct, but I'm sure the police involvement would account for a nice chunk of the budget for what, like you say, could of been a much simpler process.
