Actually these kind of knife serve for a stab in the neck (Genick in German) to kill wounded game. This one will go not to a hunter but to a guy in Bavaria who wants to carry it in his sexy leather pants

Hand forged chain Damascus knife
spsurfer replied to GruffaloGriff's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Wow!!!!!! OUTSTANDING!!! That's one of the best looking chain Damascus I've ever seen!!! Sure that with a press you could archive an even more crisp result, but every time you will hold this knife, you will remember the hours and hours of pounding the steel. Congratulations to this masterpiece! Regards Nicolas -

A small gents knife with walnut burl
spsurfer replied to spsurfer's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Hello, I don't know If you could reduce the knives in the kitchen to just one, I'm using at least three, one big 25cm chef knife, a smaller parer and one of my own knives for meat. If I would have to reduce my knives to just one in the kitchen, it would be a 15cm blade from 1.2442 steel ground to cero. Regards Nicolas -
Thank you guys! Regards Nicolas

Thank you guys, although I'm still a huge fan of carbon tool steels, these powder metallurgy steels as m390 are amazing! A pain in the ** to work with, but they keep an edge forever. Regards Nicolas

It actually depends on the use and the kind of steel. Stainless steel normally needs a little beefier edge as tool steel and a harder blade (>60HRC) the same. Now if you use the knife only for cutting, a fine edge may do the job, other hunters want something to open the rib cage or split pelvis bones, in this case a little thicker edge and you're on the safe side. The same for grinds. My knifemaker collegue Goshovskyy makes hunting knives with a hollow ground blade and an edge as a razor. Something that will excell every other blade, but don't use it on bones. spsurfer replied to spsurfer's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Thanks!! Except the big one ( don't have use for such a big knife, but it's nice to have it on my desktop ;)) all knives are being used and made for. Use them as a knife and they will last a few generations. Regards Nicolas -

Hello, strange times we're living in, here in spain right now, we're not allowed to leave our town, so I can't get to my workshop. Before, I've been busy with several projects, one, actually a dummy knife for a similar one but with more rare and expensive materials. A big hunting cutlass or bowie. I made this one as a take down frame handle. There is really no need for a take down handle, but it's fun The 26,5cm blade is made from 1.2510, guard, frame and pommel from 416 stainless with walnut scales. Later, a pair of hunting knives a father ordered- 6 replies

I have one of these since a 10 years https://www.ardennes-coticule.be/en/shop/product-application/48/knife-length-blade-14-16-cm These are very fine grit, I think to remember a 6000 so only to maintain an edge, would be hard to put on a new edge with a stone that fine. I put on a basic edge with Lansky system about every 6 months (carbon steel, used lightly nearly everyday) and when I feel the edge could cut a little better, the Belgian whetstone. Every time before using, I pass the edge over a leather strop with some metal polish.

I would not recommend sharpeners as the blade tech sharpener as these basically plane the sides of the edge and take away quit some material, the edge will allways be a little toothie. I prefer for a base grind systems as Lansky and for regular sharpening a very fine stone, as belgian wetstones. Regards Nicolas

I think my sheath maker can make everything. He has VERY reasonable prices and works very good. If you're interested, I can give you his contact details. Regards Nicolas -
Incredible craftsmanship!!!!! That looks absolutely professional! How strong is the back spring? Looks very stout (I don't like flimsy slip joints). Now for one with your own blade! Regards Nicolas

Whts round but cuts like a knife?
spsurfer replied to GruffaloGriff's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Great knife!! The 1.3505 / 52100 / 100Cr6 is my favorite steel for outdoor knives, as it takes a very thin, very sharp and long lasting edge but won't stain or rust as easy as 1.2442. My personal knife that I'm using as edc is from 1.3505 and I only need to sharpen it about twice a year, some stropping on a leather from time to time brings up again an amazing, hair popping sharpnes. There is another steel equivalent with exactly the same alloys but not made for bearings, wich is, as I heared, not as good, as the requirements for bearings is a finer grained steel. So keep watchin -
I try to wipe off all the excess solder when it's still liquid. I take a small brush, dip it in Flux an wipe off the solder. But your bolster has some curves and so some parts not easy to access.
