Hello, about a year ago, I made this big blade, later, the future owner canceled the order and I left the blade in my workshop, waiting for a nice guard and handle. Now I started again with this hunting cutlass.... 26,5cm blade 47mm wide from 6mm 1.2842, guard from iron, handle from ebony, between the iron ferrules that will be blued, I put a slim brass liner for contrast, so the handle will be pitch black with just a golden line. Regards Nicolas

Yes, till the blade will disappear in a 250 years.

Makeing the blade black is just dipping it in FeCl3, but don't expect the blade to keep that deep black finish, it will wear down or will be replaced by real patina. Another option is to hotblue the blade, never done that before.. Regards Nicolas

Thank you for being pedantic !!! (I changed the title) Regards Nicolas

Hello, since a 9 months I use one of my gentsknives everytime I go hiking etc. Now I wanted some slightly changes, other steel (ok, stupid excuse to make a new knife ;)) other ricasso.. Here the result 78mm blade (a 4mm shorter) from 1.3505 115mm handle from raindeer with guard from bronze and mammoth spacer. Now the old one will leave me .. Regards Nicolas

Worse than a long blade is a too short handle, I think it looks good! If you want to shorte the blade a centimeter, take the length from the spine and don't overheat.

No need to bin it, there is always a fix, changing the handle, blade outline... I rehandled some knives and I am thinking to rehandled my user I made a few years ago, but then I think, this is the way I did knives in 2016, so I leave it as it is. Regards Nicolas

Hello, here a Norse model, my version of a puukko style knife. I used Hitachi SanMai steel with core from blue paper steel, similar to 1.2442 and very hard (about 62HRC) and iron outer layers. These iron layers resisted to my intents to etch my logo next time, I need a more agressive acid. 90mm blade, soldered ferrule from gun metal, handle from stellar seacow, sterling silver pin. The handle has a 11,5cm. Regards Nicolas

No machines at all, only for the blade grind. I think by hand, you can control better. Regards Nicolas

Well, the walnut I got from a turkish dealer, called "turkishwalnut" on Instagram. Very tight, wonderful curly grain, but not cheap. A year ago I bought a bigger piece that will serve for a 12 handles. Rough shaped with a rasp, later a finer metal file, followed by sand paper, grain 180, 280, 360, 400, 600, 1000, 1200 and 2000. Between you need to wetten the wood and dry it with a heat gun so small splinters will raise and get cut on the next sanding. After the 2000 paper I polished with rotton stone powder. Now you need to stain it with red root oil (I got these from "the

A Wanderer with nice sambar stag
spsurfer replied to spsurfer's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Exactly, with files, sand paper.. I soldered two 3cm tubes on the brass plate for better bonding with the stag. Drilled two holes in the end of the handle and glued everything with Epoxi. Regards Nicolas -

There are flaws, hope to get rid of on the final finish. First the pommel as I will stain the handle with Epoxi... Regards Nicolas -
Hello, nearly finished, this "Wanderer" with 90mm blade from 1.3505, soldered guard from brass, spacer from stellar seacow and a nice piece of sambar. You never know how the colours will turn out on a piece of sambar, this one got some really nice, deep honey colours. It's still missing the pommel.. Regards Nicolas

The knive looks very very good!!! Allthough I like the red G10 scales on a hunting knife, I can imagine this model with walnut burl and engraved bolsters ? Great job! Regards Nicolas
