  1. Have experience with sighthounds, have had a couple of ex racers and used to foster for SLR but never worked them. I like the thought of beddy in there purely for the coat resilience. have been told to avoid anything saluki. My mate is covering his 1/4 saluki 3/4 whippet with a collie/whippet/bull. Wanted to avoid bull cross (personal preference) but should be fairly diluted with this mix. he was toying with covering her with his beddy whippet. I trust his opinion and would probably opt for anything he bred as he breeds to work them.
  2. Want to work with ferrets and run on farmed fields. Soft ish going. Wouldn't be worked heavily so would be indoors with my spanners. Would also be mooching a lot.
  3. Cheers, I'm ok with training (well spanners) but lamping/ferreting with dogs is a completely new discipline for me. Have a guy from here that's been a great source of info and he's local so I'll pester him. He mentioned he mat be breeding next year so might have to tap him up
  4. What sort of mix would you guys suggest to learn the ropes with. More interested in what to avoid, Small would be a preference. Any comments appreciated.
  5. She was a little better this weekend. I'll keep taking her until she's comfortable then build her up to working. Cheers for the advice lads
  6. She'll jump into the back of a landy fine and wades out till she floats. Just a nervy dog.
  7. Cheers for the responses guys some good advice. There is no chance I'd rehome her as she is a lovely pooch and mine are not full on working dogs more companions in the field and beaters. She'll still get plenty of excersize was just hoping to have her with me on shoot day. And there is alway my ferreting trips. I'll persist slowly using some of your tips and see how she goes. Cheers again
  8. Spaniel all the way. The reason labs are used as guide dogs is because their owners don't have to look at them.
  9. I foster for Spaniel Aid and recently adopted a second bitch. You will not find a sweeter dog and she has an outstanding pedigree. She came from a keeper and her commands are more than adequate for what I'll use her for and while out training she's a joy but he did inform me she was gun shy (not to keen on water or jumping fences either). He used her for dogging in. I have taken her on two small beats and the first she was holding back, not working at all and ended up on the lead getting tangled on everything. On the second she bolted on the first drive, not to far, and stuck by me with a
  10. If it just for beating mate either will do. I prefer my springers but would happily take a cocker. Cockers are a little more nuts in my opinion but work really hard, they can also be a little harder to control when they are onto something. But right training and you'll be golden with either.
  11. Do you keep her on the lead or on the stop whistle when something bolts? Cheers Whistle.
  12. Try spaniel aid mate. Really good charity that likes working homes got my girl from there and she's the nuts, got another at the mo that looks like he'll do well
  13. I take my girl out with the ferrets, she's still learning to mark the sets but I'm able to call her off a chase if needed. Defo hasn't hindered when beating and a hare pops.
  14. Good luck mate if you were closer you could come out with me always good to have another pair of hands.
  15. Had her out beating a few times and although she's nowhere near the finished article she is far from the worst there. At a year old I couldn't be happier with this girl. Picks it up really quickly just wish I could keep up.
  16. what that price included shipping? No mate I can get a semi auto o/u secondhand at my local rfd for about 4-500 nicker but would rather get something to start me off before committing my finances. I have a habit of starting cheap and ending up spending big
  17. Cheers guys going to try a couple on for size today
  18. Going to try a couple on for size today.
  19. Cheers guys. Best get my application in and get shopping.
  20. That's my thinking. Gonna be on it like a fat lass on cake.
  21. Been decoying over stubble to my air rifle recently, mainly to give the pooch training in retrieving, and having reasonable success. But toying with the idea of getting my SGC and was wondering if a cheap 12 gauge side by side will do the job or should I stop being such a tight twat and dig deeper. I'm by no means a die hard shooter but do enjoy a few hours out and would never turn down increased bag sizes, difference between a £100 bang or a £500 second hand one gonna make that much difference?
