  1. More to do with them killing eating and laying up I think. Mine are on raw ATM and they are responding well on it.
  2. The three I picked up are growing at a fast rate. On meat diet with occasional biscuits. Quicker than shit through a goose tho. Bring them in twice a day for a couple of hour so me and the kids can handle them. Can't wait to get them working, all really different temperaments which I like. A friend suggested cooking the meat before feeding them so when they hunt they don't associate raw meat with food, leading to less digging when on the hunt. Makes sense and he certainly does alright, the few times I've been out with him we've yet to dig. Not wanting to create a what is better .177 or . 22 ty

  5. Finally dipped my toe in and got my first ferrets. Can't wait to get them working but going to wait till the tail end of season as they are a late litter. Would like some advice on one thing in particular got 2 Jill's and 1 hob, will separate these before sexual maturity / first season so is it a good idea to get another hob to put in with my current one for company? Was thinking maybe last seasons, also to help show the way down holes? Comments and opinions appreciated. Met a guy off here who has taken me out a couple of times and helped me no end, looking forward to having a trip out w
  6. Got it mate and tried. End up reeling him in like a cod. Would have more luck training the rabbits to jump in my bag and stretch their own necks. Will persevere tho but he is only a foster would keep him if I could use him but think I'm better getting a pup or one that is half way there. Not much choice on the Isle of Wight tho. Constantly on the classifieds here but most are up north.
  7. I'm in a similar position mate. Currently fostering a pooch that looks the part, is quicker than shit through a goose and shows interest in fluffies but been trying to teach him recall and it is bloody nigh impossible. Tried treats, toys, praise the lot just can't get his attention just think he is a bit of a dick. Other than that he awesome.
  8. Hi mark, is the bitch still available ? Any chance of some pics I can pm you my email or phone no. Need to get an idea on colour and size is all. Guessing at about 22/23 tts.
  9. massive thanks to Wilbs for contacting me last night and giving me advice. Look forward to having a night out with a genuine bloke.
  10. BSA R10 mk2 .177 is my usual hunting rifle and it is a superb bit of kit. But if you want something to keep you smiling you can't go wrong with a tx200. Tx is pretty heavy but a quality accurate springer.
  11. Other than Aiden Weeks is there any one from the island on here. New to this and want to pick someone's brains. I have land and a dog ( dog is not ready yet) the only thing I'm missing is knowledge. You never know I might even buy you a pint. (Probably won't )
  12. There are plenty of links to perm slips mate. I prefer to have it written just saves on hassle also make you look professional to the farmer. Basc's insurance is a bonus aswel only a fiver a month. Your doin them a favour in the long run so it's not about getting a yes it's about not giving them a reason to say no.
  13. You'll come good mate. When you go to ask for perm just make sure your presentable and sound knowledgeable. Took me an age but when you get your first more soon follow. Get them to sign perm slips aswell I case the plod give you a tug.
  14. His recall is shocking and seems to have no idea of his name ( which is good as I'd like to change it). Rabbit bolted in front and he payed attention and followed but didn't chase. Put that down to him being on a long rope.
  15. first impressions are very good. looks very athletic, alert on the walk and went straight for the kill on the furry bunny toy. Really nice hound
  16. Cheers buster. Whether he runs or not it'll be company while I'm popping them off with my air rifle. If he can retrieve I can get fat happy days.
  17. Well I've taken on board what you guys have said and been very grateful for your input. I have a whippet x grey Arriving tomorrow just under a year old. As I said I've had greys before and love them. He stands 24 tts and looks lovely. If he doesn't want to work then I have a nice pet for the kids. Gonna work on his retrieve and recall for a month or so ( he already has the basics) then see what he is like with some furries Infront of him on my permissions. If I wasn't renting then it would have been a pup but can't risk the chewing. Will keep you posted and get some pics up once he has settled
  18. Just from what I've read they seem underestimated and would suit the home life better. If it were an outside dog purely for working then it'd be a big lurcher but want my nippers to be able to walk it.
  19. That's the sort of age I was thinking andy.
  20. Great advice lads thanks. I'm only after one ATM purely as my warden em I mean wife will be easier to deal with. I've had ex racing greyhounds before just as pets and thoroughly love the breed but they are coffee cup assassins with their tail which is why I want something smaller. I've read up on different crosses and have ruled out beddy whippet purely because of the stubbornness and have been swaying more toward pure whippet. I realise if I get a pup I will know its training and getting one used to working I may end up with someone else's ruined dog. But being new to it it would be handy to
