Got one off spanielaid in the end a few months ago and she is a little cracker. Training her myself and she is doing great ( more to do with her as I'm winging it big time). Need to work on her right and left for blind retrieves but she's already picking up for me at 9 months with a biff for a trainer.

Been decoying over stubble to my air rifle recently, mainly to give the pooch training in retrieving, and having reasonable success. But toying with the idea of getting my SGC and was wondering if a cheap 12 gauge side by side will do the job or should I stop being such a tight twat and dig deeper. I'm by no means a die hard shooter but do enjoy a few hours out and would never turn down increased bag sizes, difference between a £100 bang or a £500 second hand one gonna make that much difference?

Bloke off here took me out on a few trips and it helped a lot. Saying that my days of being a nipper a long gone.

Could do mate but a bit of leafy veg and the odd carrot entices them a treat. Can't stress enough tho about pre baiting at least 3 days.

Couple of good books out there mate and loads of old threads here. As far as training them goes collar them up and sling them down a hole ( after you've determined it's an active rabbit hole and not an angry badger set ect) but don't chuck them down too early/young as you can put them off, the books will tell you how to care for them. Basically keep them clean, warm, fed ( high protein content 35-40%) and handle them daily. Simon whitehead and alike have loads of informative vids on you tube. You get out what you put in and they are cracking creatures and a great sport. The guys on here ar

Anytime bud, you may have to fiddle with them for 5 mins but they work fine. Well my last lot did I've just ordered more.

You can pick the traps up for £12 on Amazon they work but you have to put the I me in with them, pre baiting areas for a few days to get the bugs used to them. Obviously numbers are limited to amount of traps but they keep the freezer topped up.

Cheers bud and Yes mate few cage traps to keep the freezer topped up. Got a fair amount of land to use but none that is really that active, nice to have somewhere that should produce some fast paced action.

Had a call yesterday from a very local golf course (about 2 mins drive away), took the pooch for a mooch up there last night with a couple of traps in tow to pre bait the area. Place is heaving with rabbits, conditions not ideal for ferreting, lots of thick deep guaze bush every where but still doable. Cant chuffin wait for the temp to drop and get out there. Going up there tonight to re bait and chuck out some longnets to show willing but have a feeling that it will provide a fair few busy days this winter.

It is slim pickings down here and then the ferry fare is just another expense so got to try and be sure about pooches before seeing them.

On the Isle of wight Jok. Looking at a 6 month bitch soon. Local gundog clubs run courses so might be able to do the basics.

There was no real heckles up aggression but not something I'm willing to take a punt on where nippers are involved. Nearly a 400 mile round trip aswell. Defo think my next one will be closer to home.

Cheers for the replies guys. The dog was a beaut and worked well, then it growled at my boy and that was that. Shame, the gent selling it was a real stand up guy

Going to see the dog tomorrow, guy seems really genuine and knows his stuff. He's going to give me a demo so fingers crossed.

Been looking for a cheap springer for my lads to go with thier webley jaguar, long story short helping my old man move and he whips out a webley ranger and says " do you want this son". Yes I bloody do. In good nick and a bit of blueing and will be as good as new.

Cheers Jok, have seen one and at 5 year old that been working on shoots for 4 years. Going to speak to him and find out if it will meet what I need. whatever I end up with won't be working a line they will be with me on my permissions so I don't need an all bells and whistles pooch just a steady retriever for shooting and hopefully one I can break to ferrets so it can mark on those days out. Luckily I have a few contacts within local shoots who are keeping an ear out for me but I'm eager to get going, got to try not to barrel into something that isn't right. The biggest priority really is ens

Looking for some advice guys, after working with a mates springer cross I found it a revelation, unfortunately I don't have the time to fully train a puppy so would be looking for something that can contribute from the off. 2 avenues I am looking at is either spaniel rescue or contacting working trials to see if they have anything that didn't make the grade. I want to try and avoid buying a "top worker" from people I don't know. Any suggestions on the best or alternative route would be a great help. I'm a tight git but willing to pay whatever a good pooch is worth. Will also be a family p

use my pcp all the time with great results, LOVE using my springer tho. it's heavy, old and battered but accurate as they come and has accounted for a lot of quarry, greater sense of achievment

had a pet one years ago, unfortunately died young due to a heart condition but was batshit crazy. gonna have to put in some ground work with the fuhrer.

I thought they would be up to task

Hi guys what are your thoughts on using springers for ferreting? Ideally I'd like a lurcher but life's full of compromises and the warden is warmer to the idea of a springer. Don't need anything to work the lamp just retrieve and mark. Only found one thread on here and not much else.

Training my ferts to do this on my parrot.
