  1. Off ata bit of a tangent, but anyway.......................... I remember seeing a shocking example of how far removed from the food supply we are becoming. One of the TV chefs (can't remember which one) was talking to a class of 9 - year olds, and he asked them a few questions about how food is produced. Nearly all of the children said they liked chicken nuggets, but a third of them did not know that the chicken was once alive !
  2. The best way to become more aware of the issues around food waste is to produce some yourself. Before we moved, I did it on a large scale - we hardly ever bought vegetables. I kept hens, ducks and quails for eggs and the odd bit of meat. I've only got a very small paved garden now, but I bought a little greenhouse and grow tomatoes, peas, beans, cucumbers, courgettes, salad and herbs. Everyone can grow something - use pots, buckets, old food cans, Pot noodle-type pots, anything filled with compost or good soil will do ! My point is this - if you produce something yourself, you lear
  3. Did we used to write pamphlets together in the late '80s ?? No, from the 70's to the 90's I was busy bringing up a family and trying to make ends meet. Since then, I've had a lot more time to think about things and take stock of life. Whatever happens now won't affect me, but will certainly affect my children and grandchildren. Same here mate - just that your language and tone reminded me of an old political friend...........
  4. Citizens Advice Bureau, mate ! Tell them your health is being affected by the persecution, you're feeling suicidal and have no where to turn !! It'll be sorted smartish !! LOL !! Former MP Margaret Moran used this when she was accused of fiddling expenses, mortgage interest payments, property maintenance costs and 'flipping' her second home a few times. She went 'off sick' ON FULL PAY for over two years, before resigning in ignaminious disgrace. So it works !!
  5. Largely (I think) because she has the courage of her convictions and is not afraid to answer a question directly, even if her views are controversial or unpopular - the same cannot be said of politicians, who can speak for 10 minutes, say nothing and mean even less ! The interview with HRH was refreshing and insightful - good for you, Ma'am !
  6. ......also several other reasons for culling them AND reasons for eating horse-meat AND she's a bloody good shot AND she belongs to the Worshipful Company of Butchers AND sees herself as a guardian of the countryside. Shame she's already married really !!
  7. Don't usually watch CF, but thought I'd have a quick listen to HRH's views on a few rural matters. Talk about straight answer to a straight question.............!
  8. Same here, no pigs, but the hens get all waste food.... but remember; the EU passed a law in this country making it illegal to feed kitchen waste to domestic fowl !!The law only bans the feeding of meat or meat products to vegetarian animals, so as long as there's no meat or bones in the waste you're OK to feed it to hens (or pigs for that matter). Swill bins aren't collected any more because most places can't guarantee that their waste is totally meat-free. Are pigs not omnivores ...... Bang to rights - fair point Socks ! Shouldn't have said 'vegetarian'...............( but if you want t
  9. So does that mean we can have one........?? (Hurry up and decide - I've got loads of stuff to sell !! )

  12. There's a growing number of cooks who espouse thrifty recipes, cheap ingredients and using left-overs - (Jack Monroe is probably chief among them, if you're interested), and there is a growing awareness of the issues. In my view, the heart of the problem is that the supermarkets have an almost complete strangle-hold on the food supply. They control the livelihoods of thousands of farmers at he start of the chain, and at the consumer end use every manner of coersion and subtle trickery to make sure we spend more than we should, and buy far more than we need. My local Tesco recently held
  13. Typical bloody south easterner, got that much money you can afford to chuck half of it in the bin.. Walshie buys things he doesn't even like just so he can throw them away !
  14. A House of Lords committee has urged supermarkets to end BOGOF deals (buy one, get one free), to cut the "morally repugnant" amount of food thrown away in the UK. It's estimated that shops and consumers throw away 15 million tonnes of food every year, costing each family around £60 per month, the equivalent of 24 meals ! 60% of household food waste is perfectly edible !! Just to illustrate this further, consider that every single day, in the UK alone, we throw away 24 million slices of bread, 5.8 million potatoes and 5.9 million glasses of milk. There has been almost no progress in red
  15. So you agree with me -it's a self-perpetuating oligarchy, mate ? Err....Yes. Not to be confused with a country rum by a small group of elite baby meerkats - that's an Oleg-archy !!
  16. Or you could just choose your words more carefully................
  17. That's exactly what I have - about half the faith I should have !!
  18. So you agree with me -it's a self-perpetuating oligarchy, mate ?
  19. Cheeky fecker !! Sometimes the voices in my head make sense !!
  20. You've got leaves on the trees already ?? I'll bet the only 2 pigeons left alive in W.Yorks are glad about that !! We've got a huge grassed area near us, and the woodies are often on the ground in groups of up to a dozen - trouble is you can't get near enough to them to get a shot. Crows and maggies warn the feckers !! Honestly !! Anyone else had this ??
  21. Why don't we have a classified section for fishing gear? There's one for everything else, it seems, but the anglers on the site (and I'll bet there's a good few) have to search under 'miscellaneous' . Think of country pursuits and fieldsports and what do you have? Hunting, shooting and FISHING ! We even have our own annual fishing event, but if I want to buy or sell a fishing rod................
  22. I think the point is right about her being one of only four women in the Cabinet, and that's why CamMoron has backed her. It would be interesting to see a break-down of the vote that overturned the Standrds Committee's initial findings, and decided that she had, in fact, broken the rules, but that she hadn't done it intentionally ! Such information is never released (can't imagine why !), but I'm prepared to stick my neck out and hazard a guess that it was along party lines - the MP's panel has a Tory majority ! And THAT is why the Standards Committee should have the final say - MP's are
  23. Taliban's latest armoured carrier...............
  24. Once again, 'justice' scrapes the bottom of the barrel..................... http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/milly-dowler-killer-levi-bellfield-3363929 AND, the ba5tard's converted to Islam.......!!
