  1. Therein lies the problem, they have had "handouts" for so long they have lost the ability/skills to grow there own food. The Foreign aid would be better served to supply them with machinery/technology and Educate them on how to grow and feed themselves. However if they did teach them to make and grow there own food Billions would be lost in the Revenue made from these Countries. Sp Who the feck brought Africa up .......................? I'm getting a bit fed up of saying this, but my major concern is that we, Great Britain, the United Kingdom, import 40% of our food. Mick's assertion
  2. Bang on, mate. Give a man a fish and he will feed himself for a day. Give him a net, and he can fish for a lifetime ! We have a lot of influence over the food supply of several African countries - and our continued 'aid', debt relief and support for the incumbent government is dependent usually on them spending it with us ! In effect, we give them money to buy stuff back from us. But (I'm repeating myself here, I know) my biggest concern isn't for other countries, but for my own. 40% of UK food supply is outside of our control.... 40% !!
  3. And that is the real heart of the problem ! We can get around the effects of floods, droughts and so on (they are only temporary, after all). But the amount of viable land we have at our disposal can only produce a finite amount of food, which can only feed a certain number of mouths. I don't think it's too long until we reach the tipping point !
  4. Have you ever thought that the grants and payments not to farm are used to artificially inflate prices? I don't know if you're old enough to remember the EU 'wine lake' or the 'butter mountain' some years ago, but they happened as a result of policies which guaranteed farmers a fixed price for their produce, whether it was needed or not. So, you're right - it's not a 'free market', and it certainly isn't run for our benefit ! You say that , mother nature has fed us so far, but I'll repeat - there has never been so many of, and there's only going to be more ! So what would you do, Mick
  5. Food waste is one of my biggest bug-bears ! i agree with you 1,000% - eat seasonally wherever you can, get to know your local grocer, reduce your waste and, ultimately, produce some food yourself - even if it's only a few potatoes in a big pot ! Forget strawberries in October, dig out some left-overs recipes, use your nearest market instead of the Big 4 cathedrals of over-consumption. And you don't sound like David Icke, mate.
  6. I haven't seen the film, Wilf so I can't offer any comment on that, mate. Case in point - A couple or three years ago, the price of rice sky-rocketed here. This was because India (one of the world's largest producers) did not keep back enough reserves of rice for their own population. People died in the riots that followed the price of their own rice doubling overnight, as a result of the principles of supply and demand. The following year, the Indian government massively increased the amount they kept for themselves. Those same principles reduced our supply and hiked up prices for us.
  7. It is if we do nothing......................
  8. I'd refer you to my reply to Tandors, Wilf. I'm not suggesting that we try to feed everyone - I'm concerned that we're not even close to feeding ourselves !
  9. I would tend to agree Max. I think some form of population control (world-wide) will have to be implemented. God knows how, but......................
  10. I never mentioned feeding anyone except ourselves. Because a technology is being developed and used largely in poorer countries, does that mean we shouldn't try to see if there are any benefits and potential for us ?
  11. I don't need to Google Monsanto, but their influence is a separate issue to the core problem - 'How are we going to feed everyone?'. And I mean 'everyone' here....................... We already import around 40% of our food, and since some of the largest producers in the world already grow (and sell) GMO's, is it even possible for us to resist their import indefinitely ? Our reliance on imports makes our continued food security very tenuous. Surely it makes sense to ensure that you can feed your own population, or at least maximise your potential ? As The One has pointed out, we can't
  12. Serious subject from me this time.............................. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-27060789 Previous trials of GM crops have been disrupted, destroyed and dug up. But in a world with an increasing population, a finite amount of agricultural land and a diminishing water supply, can resistance to GM be justified any longer? Is it such a bad thing to able to modify wheat, so that the crop produces it's own nitrogen supply (like peas and beans do), rather than be reliant on nitrogen fertilizers? Or to modify, say, corn and tomatoes to become more dr
  13. http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/money/pensions/article4065453.ece An announcement like this raises so many questions................... When they give you the date, is it a firm appointment or just an expected date? Do they just give you a time, or is it on a 'morning' or 'afternoon' basis? If you don't keep the appointment, do they come and collect you ? If you wait in all day and they don't come for you, should you complain ?
  14. There are so many ways to approach a story like this................................Easter used to be a time of quiet reflection and thanks for Him laying down His life at the Crucifixion. How can we possibly imagine how the Easter bunny must have suffered ? Or, I could have suggested that a lifetime of belief and loyalty used to earn you eternal peace and salvation. Nowadays, you get double Nectar points and 2p off a litre of petrol ! Or, that in the midst of an obesity epidemic, the average British child will consume an extra 10,000 calories this weekend ! Or, that when all t
  15. A headline that deserves to be read again.................... http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11150879.Cowley_Road_Passion_play_off_because_it_had_no_permit_for_crucifixion/?ref=nt
  16. Do you mean you have to log in each time you visit? Are you ticking the little box that says 'Remember me' ? If so, maybe you're just very forgettable..............
  17. Stick with it 'til the end....................
  18. Went off to my local tip a little earlier, with a pile of scrap timber I've been meaning to get rid of for a week or two. The current Mrs. Blackbriar said to me "We're nearly out of milk. Can you pick some up on the way back?". I duly dropped the rubbish off and proceeded to my local Tesco, as requested, where the scene of chaos and carnage that greeted me beggared belief ! A long line of cars, all queueing for few precious square feet of tarmac was just the beginning of my ordeal, and should have served as a salutary warning of what awaited. inside, harassed mothers drag crying ch
  19. .......................and it's not just on the road ! There's a smashing stretch of river near us that has a lovely shared cycle and pathway - all even and nicely laid and around 6 feet wide. The times I've had stand-up rows with lycra-clad w***ers who expect you to move out of their way, because they're doing 20mph on a fecking footpath, and seem incapable of slowing down or (God forbid) going round you! Probably the same to55ers who overtake on the inside and turn left through red lights !
  20. Something like this maybe.............................?
  21. Lads, lads, lads....................Ms Manjoo is absolutely right. You can't keep your 'significant other females' chained to the kitchen sink for ever. Otherwise, they can't reach the ironing board !
  22. Best of luck, Redneck. I nearly bought some electric daisy, but purple nettle that tastes like beef -gotta be worth a try ! I got couple ground cherry seeds planted as well. The cherries are in as paper like seed case,so another plant that looks ornamental but has edible parts I'm guessing you mean 'ground' as in 'planted in the ground', rather than 'ground up' ? Haven't come across that one, but I'll look out for it .
  23. New guy but really making his mark. Turns out some quality catty's, too !
